Former PM Boris Johnson’s negligence caused 23,000 additional COVID deaths in Britain
Johnson initially failed to grasp the severity of the virus and continued to delay imposing a lockdown.
New Delhi: The UK COVID investigation report has revealed that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s delayed decisions initially contributed to 23,000 additional deaths in the country. According to the report, Johnson initially failed to grasp the severity of the virus and continued to delay imposing a lockdown.
The report’s chairperson, former judge Heather Hallett, stated that the government experienced a toxic and chaotic environment during the pandemic. Johnson constantly changed decisions, and many important suggestions were ignored.
The investigation also found that if Britain had imposed a lockdown a week earlier, on March 16, 2020, the number of deaths in the first wave could have been 48% lower.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Johnson government faced numerous allegations, including parties held in Downing Street and violations of lockdown rules. Serious questions also arose about the conduct of Health Minister Matt Hancock and Chief Advisor Dominic Cummings.
The report also provides 19 recommendations for dealing with future pandemics.
