‘Gone Very Well’: Donald Trump on US-China trade talks in Europe, says TikTok’s fate depends on…

Washington: United States President Doland Trump on Monday (local time) informed about the crucial meeting in Europe between the United States and China. He stated that the meeting has “gone very well”, indicating a major deal with the Dragon concerning social media platform – TikTok. The US President further stated that he will have a telephonic conversation with his Chinese counterpart on Friday, emphasising that the relationship between both the countries “remains very strong”.

What Did Trump Say About US-China Meeting?

“The big Trade Meeting in Europe between the United States of America, and China, has gone VERY WELL! It will be concluding shortly. A deal was also reached on a ‘certain’ company that young people in our Country very much wanted to save. They will be very happy! I will be speaking to President Xi on Friday. The relationship remains a very strong one!!! President DJT,” Trump said on Truth Social.

Why Did Trump Say Future of TikTok Is Uncertain In US?

Earlier in the day, the US President also reacted on the future of TikTok in his country. He stated that Beijing will ultimately play a major role which will decide the fate of the social media platform in the US. The comes when the trade negotiations between the two countries continue.

While talking to media in New Jersey before heading back to Washington, President Trump connected the ongoing discussions to wider economic and technological issues. He mentioned, “We are currently in negotiations regarding TikTok. It’s uncertain whether we will allow it to continue or not; that decision rests with China. Ultimately, it isn’t of great significance to me. My primary concern is for the children who enjoy the platform.”

“I mean, selfishly speaking, I did very well with TikTok, and I got the youth vote. I got numbers that nobody’s ever even come close to in the Republican Party, nobody,” he added.

As per The New York Times, Trump has until September 17 to enforce or delay a law requiring TikTok to be separated from its Chinese owner, ByteDance, or face a ban in the US. The President has already delayed enforcing the law three times.

In 2024, Congress cleared the bipartisan legislation in order to ban the Chinese app – TikTok in  US. There was a condition that the app will be banned unless it found a non-Chinese owner due to national security, as per The New York Times.
