During the call, Silva asked Trump to remove tariffs placed on Brazil. Both leaders also floated the idea of a meeting in person in the near future. According to an announcement from the Brazilian presidential office, the two leaders spoke for 30 minutes in a friendly manner. During the call, Lula indicated there was the possibility of meeting Trump next month in Malaysia.

Vice President of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin, stated, “We are very optimistic that we will move toward a win-win situation in this relationship.” Alckmin has been tasked with restoring bilateral ties through discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He also stated that the call between Silva and Trump had gone “even better than we expected” and they exchanged personal phone numbers.
