17:44 (IST)

That brings us to the end of our coverage of the first Test between India and England in Hyderabad, with Stokes and Co walking away with a memorable victory. The action shifts to Visakhapatnam, where India will aim to bounce back in the second Test that gets underway on Friday.

For now, this is Amit signing off bidding you all goodbye!

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

Not often does India lose a Test in its own backyard, that too after collecting a lead of nearly 200 in the first innings! But this English team is a different animal altogether, pulling off one of the most dramatic victories in the format in recent memory! After conceding a 190-run first innings lead, they were facing the possibility of a defeat inside three days, possibly an innings loss, after being reduced to 163/5 in their second innings. Ollie Pope and Tom Hartley, however, turned the game on its head with bat and ball respectively, with Pope also collecting two crucial catches close to the batter today that helped the left-arm spinner get the early breakthroughs.

This is only the fourth Test defeat for India at home in the last 10 years — two each against Australia and England respectively. It’s a five-Test series, and the narrow defeat in Hyderabad isn’t the end of the world for Rohit Sharma and Co as far as this series is concerned. But they will have learnt a stern lesson from this defeat and will hope to come out stronger in a few days from now.

What a day for Test cricket! West Indies in Brisbane against Australia and England in Hyderabad against India. The format's alive and kicking indeed!

After 69 overs, India 202/9 (Jasprit Bumrah 6, Mohammed Siraj 12)

Stokes decides to bring pace back into the equation by giving Wood another over with less than 10 minutes left in the day’s play. Bumrah narrowly escapes a run out scare in the second delivery after responding to Siraj’s call for a run, though its a leg bye, with Wood kicking the ball onto the stumps. Three added to the Indian total in Wood’s over, two of them through leg byes.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 68 overs, India 199/9 (Jasprit Bumrah 5, Mohammed Siraj 12)

Bumrah decides to play a lofted shot down the ground and gets enough time to return for a second as Bairstow cuts the ball off in front of the boundary rope. FOUR! Siraj gets down on one knee and slog-sweeps Hartley towards deep midwicket. Another stumping appeal right after the boundary, and the square-leg umpire once again refers it to his TV counterpart. Foot’s grounded as usual. The no-ball hooter also goes off for the first time in this innings as Hartley oversteps. Bumrah then pushes for a brace in the fourth delivery after tapping the ball towards mid on. He gets off strike with a single in the penultimate ball. Loud LBW appeal against Bumrah in the final delivery, but is turned down by umpire Gaffaney.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 66 overs, India 189/9 (Jasprit Bumrah 3, Mohammed Siraj 5)

Rehan replaces Root with Hartley continuing from the other end. Couple of stumping appeals in each of the last two overs, against Siraj and Bumrah off Rehan and Hartley’s bowling respectively, and on both occasions the batter has his foot grounded. The two tail-enders, meanwhile, aren’t shying away from playing their shots.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 64 overs, India 182/9 (Jasprit Bumrah 2, Mohammed Siraj 3)

Local lad Siraj joins Bumrah at the centre, receiving a loud cheer from the crowd, and gets off the mark right away with a brace after guiding the ball through square leg. Bumrah later gets a thick edge wide of the slip fielder that allows him enough time for a second run. With the target looking well beyond reach, Bumrah and Siraj might as well have a bit of fun and get India past 200 at least. England captain Stokes, meanwhile, has opted for the extra 30 minutes to try and get a result today itself.

After 62 overs, India 176/8 (Ravichandran Ashwin 24, )

BOWLED! Tom Hartley completes five-for on Test debut! What a turnaround for the young left-arm spinner who had been struck for back-to-back sixes and conceded 63 in his first nine overs on the opening day! Breaks the partnership that helped bring India back into the game with a beauty, getting the ball to pitch along middle and turn sharply to not only beat Bharat’s outside edge but also clip the off stump! England two wickets away from victory now, and it remains to be seen if Stokes presser for the extra 30 minutes to try and wrap this up today itself.

After 61 overs, India 173/7 (Srikar Bharat 28, Ravichandran Ashwin 24)

Leach returns for another burst with four overs left in the day’s play. Ashwin cuts a ball that kicks up higher than usual outside off, getting enough time to come back for a second run. FOUR! Another delivery that is bowled short and rears up higher than usual, and Ashwin this time cuts it behind square to bring up fifty of the partnership with Bharat! The pair bring up the milestone in 125 deliveries, with the stand giving the hosts a glimmer of a hope after the collapse earlier in the session.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 60 overs, India 164/7 (Srikar Bharat 27, Ravichandran Ashwin 17)

FOUR! Bharat gets down on one knee and slog sweeps down the ground towards the vacant long on fence! He had been batting on 9 off 38 deliveries, and suddenly surges ahead of Ashwin with a flurry of boundaries. He’s decided to take the attack to the visitors now and give them a taste of their own medicine. Scampers across for a quick single later in the over, with six coming off Rehan’s fourth. Root replaces Hartley from the other end, with Ashwin and Bharat keeping the scoreboard ticking through singles, three of which are collected in the 60th. The current partnership is worth 45 in 118 deliveries, and Stokes will be desperate to break it before close of play.

16:38 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 58 overs, India 155/7 (Srikar Bharat 20, Ravichandran Ashwin 15)

FOUR! A boundary to the Indians after what felt like ages! Rehan bowls one short and wide to Bharat and the Indian keeper-bat isn’t one to let this pass even if the Indians are staring at a defeat at the moment. Cuts it firmly towards the point fence, eliciting a cheer from the Hyderabad crowd. FOUR! Cheeky boundary for Bharat this time as the ball kicks up higher than expected and gets a deflection off the toe end, with Bharat shaping for a leave. The ball sails over Root at slip and runs all the way to third man, bringing up 150 for the hosts! Bharat pulls the final ball of the over for a single.

Run-out scare for Bharat in the following over as he attempts a quick single, but Ashwin manages to send him back in the nick of time. He gets a nick towards slip where the ball lands just short of Root. Once again, Bharat was caught in two minds and ended up playing a half-shot. The keeper-batter then drives the ball towards deep midwicket off a full toss for a brace.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 56 overs, India 144/7 (Srikar Bharat 9, Ravichandran Ashwin 15)

Wood’s taken off after a three-over burst, with Stokes bringing Rehan back into the attack with another 30 minutes left in the day’s play. The wrist spinner had conceded 13 in his only over so far today, but is bowling in a very different situation where Ashwin and Bharat are hoping to stonewall their way to safety. Concedes a single at the start of his new spell. Maiden to Hartley in the following over. Eight more overs to be bowled after this one.

16:27 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 54 overs, India 143/7 (Srikar Bharat 9, Ravichandran Ashwin 14)

Single collected in each of the last two overs, both of them coming off Ashwin’s bat. Ashwin and Bharat have absorbed the pressure quite well so far, and have added 24 for the eighth wicket in 82 deliveries. If they can somehow extend this partnership past 50, they might just exert some pressure on the Englishmen even if they still are in control of the game.

16:19 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 52 overs, India 141/7 (Srikar Bharat 9, Ravichandran Ashwin 12)

Three runs added to the Indian total in the last two overs, including a leg bye in the second delivery of Wood’s over after Bharat misses the ball while attempting a glance. Wood did appeal for a leg-before, but in vain. Hartley, meanwhile, returns to the attack, replacing Root.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 50 overs, India 138/7 (Srikar Bharat 9, Ravichandran Ashwin 10)

Pace introduced for the first time in this session as Mark Wood replaces Jack Leach, who managed to bowl nine overs despite a problematic knee. Bharat and Ashwin collect a single each off his bowling in his first over at the start of a new spell. Ashwin collects a double off Root in the following over with a cut through point, moving to double figures in the process.

After 48 overs, India 134/7 (Srikar Bharat 8, Ravichandran Ashwin 7)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 47 overs, India 131/7 (Srikar Bharat 5, Ravichandran Ashwin 7)

FOUR! India collect a boundary after 54 deliveries, with Ashwin collecting his first in 26 balls! Drives the ball in front of square with authority. The Hyderabad crowd finally regain their voice after sitting in stunned silence for the most part in this session. Drinks brought to the field at the end of the 47th over.

15:42 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 45 overs, India 123/7 (Srikar Bharat 3, Ravichandran Ashwin 1)

Single collected in each of the last three overs, all three of them by Bharat as he finally opens his account. Both batters still are blocking their way for the most part. They might be hopeful of defending through the remainder of the session and take the match to the final day. England, meanwhile, are just three good deliveries away from victory.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 42 overs, India 120/7 (Srikar Bharat 0, Ravichandran Ashwin 1)

The procession continues at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium as Iyer nicks the ball to Root off Leach, who replaces Root in the attack. Hartley continues from the other end and the Englishmen appeal loudly for a caught-behind against Ashwin with the batter attempting a sweep. The umpire however, shakes his head, and UltraEdge shows no contact with the bat, resulting in England burning a review.

OUT! Can’t keep Ben Stokes out of this game either, as the England skipper runs Ravindra Jadeja — the fastest runner in the Indian team — out with a brilliant direct hit near mid on! The England players started celebrating right away but the on-field umpires need a second look before arriving at a decision. Stokes collected the ball and threw it towards the non-striker’s end, all in one go, while Jadeja was scampering off for a quick single. What made the dismissal even more impressive was the fact that Stokes wasn’t even looking at the stumps. IND 119/6

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 36 overs, India 112/5 (Shreyas Iyer 7, Ravindra Jadeja 1)

Iyer collects a single at the start of Root’s 12th over, the only run coming in that over. Jadeja nearly offered the slip fielder a catch with an outside edge in the fourth delivery, the ball landing well short in the end. Jadeja opens his account in the following over with a single off Hartley. Big shout for LBW against Jadeja by the left-arm spinner in the final delivery of his over, but it’s turned down as the southpaw had taken a big stride forward. The ball would have also missed leg had they reviewed it.

After 34 overs, India 108/5 (Shreyas Iyer 4, Ravindra Jadeja 0)

Ravindra Jadeja joins Shreyas Iyer in the middle now with the English spinners suddenly making the Hyderabad wicket unplayable — the very same wicket that Ollie Pope was collecting boundaries off for fun over the last two days.

OUT! India have now lost half their side with a little over 100 on the board, and it’s starting to get increasingly difficult for them now. Root gets the ball to grip and turn sharply from round the wicket. Rahul’s a little late in bringing the bat down and ends up getting hit on the pad right in front of middle. Rahul goes for the review, once again out of hope, and gets three reds on HawkEye. IND 107/5

Joe Root operates from the other end, with Rahul and new batter Shreyas Iyer collecting a single each, the latter getting off the mark in the process. Four byes added to the Indian total in the following over as the ball not only beats Rahul’s outside edge, but Foakes’ gloves as well and runs all the way. India will happily accept these extras, especially when they’re four down chasing what now certainly is a steep target. The four byes bring up the 100 for the Indians.

Rahul and Axar are back at the crease with the former on strike at the start of the final session of the day. Hartley to bowl the first over after tea. Both teams would have had intense discussions in the dressing room with the game tantalisingly poised at the moment.

TEA ON DAY 4 — Joe Root bowls out the final over of the session, collecting a maiden as India head to tea needing another 136 to win with seven wickets in hand. The hosts got off to a promising start with Rohit leading the way before Hartley’s three wickets in an outstanding post-lunch spell helped the Englishmen regain control. The partnership between Rahul and Axar however, is a promising one, worth 32 so far, and has helped the Indians regain their confidence after it was dented by the debuting left-arm spinner.

We’ll be back in less than 20 minutes’ time for the final session of the day.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 28 overs, India 95/3 (KL Rahul 21, Axar Patel 17)

Wrist-spinner Rehan Ahmed introduced for the first time in this innings with India needing another 150 to win with seven wickets in hand. FOUR! Slightly overpitched from Rehan and Axar drills this down the ground past mid off for his first boundary of the day! Follows it with a beautiful drive that is placed between cover and extra cover, resulting in two boundaries in three deliveries! FOUR! Make that a hat-trick of boundaries for the southpaw now as he pulls a half-tracker from the wrist spinner! The sudden flurry of boundaries should repair India’s dented confidence. Wood, meanwhile, gets the ball to tail back in in the last second while bowling to Rahul. That should make things interesting for him.

13:58 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 26 overs, India 81/3 (KL Rahul 19, Axar Patel 5)

FOUR! A welcome boundary for the Indians, collected after a gap of eight overs! Rahul paddles the ball towards the vacant fine leg fence. FOUR! Back-to-back fours for Rahul as he sweeps firmly through square leg! Appeal for leg-before against Rahul in the final delivery, and is turned down by the umpire. Eight off Hartley’s 10th over. Wood, meanwhile, is putting in full effort in order to challenge Axar with some short stuff. Except the ball hardly climbs despite hitting the deck at nearly 90mph, with the Hyderabad wicket losing a fair bit of the carry that it had on the opening day and not having much for the faster bowlers. Bumrah has been effective over the last two days but that was mainly due to reverse swing.

13:51 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 24 overs, India 73/3 (KL Rahul 11, Axar Patel 5)

Hartley returns for another burst with not much time left for tea, Stokes hoping the debutant is able to prise out another wicket before the interval. Hartley’s bowling from a different end though and it remains to be seen if he gets as much purchase from this side. Gets massive turn in the fifth delivery with the keeper having to stretch his arms to his right to a delivery that had pitched along off. Pace brought back from the other end with Mark Wood replacing Root. Concedes just a single to Rahul at the start of his new spell. Wood had been taken off after just one over at the start of the session, but will hope to make more of an impact here.

13:40 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 22 overs, India 70/3 (KL Rahul 9, Axar Patel 4)

Couple of singles conceded by Leach, one each to Rahul and Axar. LBW appeal against Rahul off Root’s bowling in the following over, but the impact is well outside off. The boundaries, meanwhile, have dried up for the Indians thanks to the flurry of wickets, with India having not collected a single one for 33 balls now since Rohit’s back-to-back reverse sweeps off Leach. India can’t afford to go into a shell here and allow the Englishmen to build more pressure on them. They need to take a leaf out of Ollie Pope’s playbook and attack sooner rather than later.

13:33 (IST)

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 20 overs, India 65/3 (KL Rahul 7, Axar Patel 1)

Axar gets off the mark with a single off Leach in his fourth delivery. Stokes, meanwhile, brings off-spinner Root back into the attack to counter the left-handed batter. And Root nearly knocks over the off pole after Axar decides to shoulder his arms to a ball that holds its line, and narrowly misses the off stump. Challenges his outside edge again a couple of deliveries later, this time with a delivery that turns away sharply. Root starts his new spell with a maiden. Another 30 minutes left for tea, and one more wicket at this stage should make this England’s game to lose.

India vs England Day 4 LIVE

After 18 overs, India 63/3 (KL Rahul 6, Axar Patel 0)

Bairstow’s kneeling at 2nd slip at the moment, hoping to snaffle the ball that comes at a low height off the outside edge. FOUR! Rohit continues to build pressure and decides to take on England’s attacking field with a reverse sweep behind square that is placed wide of the slip cordon. Repeats the shot in the very next delivery, and to a similar result. Rehan, standing at backward point, isn’t able to cut the ball off on either occasion. Expensive over for Leach, the left-arm spinner going for 10 in his third over after conceding just a single in his first two. Hartley bowls with a relatively spread out field to Rohit in the next over, with fielders placed at square and long leg and a lone slip. He takes Rohit by surprise with one that stays a touch lower than usual. Later appeals successfully for LBW against the Indian skipper with one that holds its line and raps Rohit on the pad bang in front of middle. Rohit goes for the review, more out of hope, and ends up burning it by getting three reds. India have now lost a third wicket in this session — all of them to one bowler in the same spell. Axar Patel walks out at No 5 with India hoping to counter the English charge with a left-right combination.

Maiden for Leach in his second over of the day. He doesn’t appear to be having too many issues bowling at the moment, and should be able to provide some support to Hartley and Root. Hartley, meanwhile, has a silly point standing behind the popping crease, somewhat closer to the slip cordon. The visitors are maintaining pressure on the Indians with close-in fielders. FOUR! Rohit brings up the fifty for the hosts with a sweep behind square off a fuller delivery from Hartley that’s pitched around middle and leg. A welcome boundary for the Indians.

FOUR! A welcome boundary for new batter Rahul, one that should boost his confidence! Goes for an aerial cut square of the wicket off a delivery that rears up higher than usual, with Zak Crawley, standing at cover, having no idea where the ball was and it rolled all the way to the fence unhindered.

Meanwhile, someone at the stadium — probably a member of the ‘Barmy Army’ — is blaring the West Indies’ ‘Rally’ anthem on a trumpet in celebration of one of the greatest Test matches ever witnessed. In case you missed it, West Indies just pulled off a shock for the ages at Australia’s fortress of Gabba, defeating them by 8 runs in the Day-Night Test with pacer Shamar Joseph bowling his side to victory with figures of 7/68!

Another LBW shout against Rohit later in the over, once again pitching outside leg, with the shout mainly coming from keeper Foakes. 10 overs gone, and India have 32 on the board without losing a wicket. Bit of confusion between Rohit and Jaiswal as the former sends his partner back while initially pushing for a single in the fourth ball of the over. Another loud LBW appeal against Jaiswal two balls later after the southpaw attempted a reverse sweep. The ball was pitching outside leg, so wasn’t in contention for a leg-before in any case. Two singles from the over. Jack Leach, meanwhile, is back on the field according to reports, though it remains to be seen if he gets the ball in hand.

Root continues from round the wicket. Just a single conceded in his fourth over, with Rohit setting off for a single in the third delivery. India aren’t really taking the ‘Bazball’ route right now the way they did in their first innings. Understandable, given they’re batting fourth on a worn out surface.

After 6 overs, India 24/0 (Rohit Sharma 16, Yashasvi Jaiswal 7)

England burn their first review in the sixth over after an unsuccessful LBW appeal by Hartley against Jaiswal. The ball had struck the southpaw quite low on the front pad after beating his inside edge, but the extra turn is what might have prompted the umpire to shake his head. HawkEye shows the ball to be missing leg. Later in the over, Rohit decides to bring out the sweep shot as well, guiding the ball along the ground square of the wicket for a single. Just two from the over.

After 5 overs, India 22/0 (Rohit Sharma 15, Yashasvi Jaiswal 6)

FOUR! Jaiswal gets down on one knee and sweeps the ball behind square to collect his first boundary! The Indians are showing the Englishmen they can play that shot well too. Jaiswal gets off strike with a single the very next delivery.

India vs England 1st Test Day 4 Updates: Ollie Pope to will take the strike on Day 4 of the Hyderabad Test between India and England with only one hope – to repeat what he did on Day 3. Unbeaten on 148, the batter has brought England back into the game with his sublime batting as Indian bowlers struggled on a slow deck at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium.

England ended Day 3 on 316/6 and lead India by 126 runs. With four wickets more left in the kitty, England will look to stretch the lead to at least 200 runs before India get into the bat. The second innings have been tough for Indian bowlers on a pitch that didn’t offer much spin. Ravindra Jadeja took one wicket but gave away 101 runs, while Ravichandran Ashwin had two after leaking 93 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah ahs been the pic of the bowlers with two wickets from 12 overs and has only given away 29. Axar Patel has also taken one wicket so far. Indian bowlers will aim to wrap up England’s innings in the first session on Day 4 which will allow them to finish the match today itself.
