Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound, India(BHARAT)’s official entry to the 98th Academy awards, finally hit the silver screens on September 26. The film, starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, saw a modest opening at the domestic box office, despite being backed by Dharma Productions.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Homebound managed to collect just Rs 30 lakh nett on day 1. The film fell short of expectations when compared to Ishaan’s Dhadak, which earned Rs 8.71 crore and Phone Bhoot Rs 2.05 crore. On its opening day, Vishal’s Salaam Venky had collected Rs 45 lakh, as per Sacnilk.com.
Well, the film underwent 11 changes mandated by the CBFC before its release in India(BHARAT), even though it had already earned recognition at prestigious International festivals like Cannes and the Toronto International Film Festival. According to trade insiders, the film released in about 200-225 screens. Trade analyst Komal Nahta shared with SCREEN: “The makers released it in a limited screens because it is not a usual commercial film. They wanted it to grow by word-of-mouth publicity.”

Helmed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Homebound is inspired by journalist Basharat Peer’s article Taking Amrit Home, (A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway).
The film explores the childhood bond between a Muslim and a Dalit who aspire to become police officers in hope of retaining dignity deprived by their surnames. Adding to widespread appeal, Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese serves as an executive producer on the film. It is backed by Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla.
