Nepal Gen Z protest: Damages worth a whopping Rs 8,500 crore were incurred during the Nepal Gen Z protest that toppled the K P Sharma Oli-led government, and resulted in the deaths of 77 people earlier this year, a government report has revealed.
How much losses occurred during Nepal Gen Z protests?
According to the report by a government committee tasked with assessing the damage to life and public and private property during the Nepal Gen Z protests that rocked the Himalayan nation on September 8 and 9 this year, leading to the fall of the KP Sharma Oli regime, 77 people were killed during the 2-day agitation, while the country incurred a total of physical damage amounting to Rs 84.45 billion.
The report, submitted at a Cabinet meeting at Singha Durbar on Thursday, said that all seven provinces of Nepal recorded damage during the movement, affecting 54 out of a total of 77 districts and 262 local units.
A total of 2,168 government and public bodies were affected, with 2,671 buildings damaged, amounting to an estimated loss of Rs 39.31 billion, while 12,659 vehicles were damaged, resulting in losses worth Rs 12.93 billion, the report said, adding that losses in the government and public sector stand at Rs 44.93 billion, those in the private sector at Rs 33.54 billion, and losses in community and other sectors at Rs 5.97 billion.
What about the human toll?
On the human toll of the violent protest, the report revealed that of the 77 recorded deaths, 20 occurred on September 8, 37 on September 9 and another 20 in the days that followed.
A total of 2,429 people were injured, of whom 17 were below 13 years of age, while 1,433 were between the ages of 13 and 28, it revealed.
The committee report also presented Prime Minister Sushila Karki with a detailed reconstruction action plan with an estimated cost of Rs 36.30 billion for rebuilding the damaged government and public sector structures.

KP Sharma Oli quit as the prime minister of Nepal on September 9 after hundreds of protesters stormed his office, demanding his resignation following the killing of at least 19 people in police action during Nepal Gen-Z protest on September 8.
According to official figures, 77 people, including three policemen, were killed during the violent protests that changed the country’s political landscape and put former Chief Justice Sushila Karki on the top post as the leader of a caretaker government.
On September 21, PM Karki’s cabinet constituted a committee to assess the damage to life and public and private property incurred during the two-day protest. The committee completed its task within 75 days and submitted its report in the Singha Durbar on Thursday.
