‘I married him because…’: Indian woman who married Pakistani man moves Lahore HC after…

Sarabjeet Kaur, and India(BHARAT)n Sikh woman from Punjab’s Kapurthala who married a Pakistani man, Nasir Hussain, filed a plea in Pakistan’s Lahore High Court, accusing the local police of pressuring the inter-faith couple to end their marriage.

In her petition, Sarabjeet, who reportedly converted to Islam and changed her name to Noor before marrying Hussain, alleged that the police had conducted an illegal raid at the couple’s home in Sheikhupura, on the outskirts of Lahore, according to Pakistan. In response to their petition, Justice Farooq Haider ordered the police to stop harassing the couple, reports said.

Sarabjeet also told the top court that she had approached the India(BHARAT)n High Commission in Islamabad to extend her visa and sought assistance in obtaining Pakistani nationality.

Who is Sarabjeet Kaur?

Sarabjeet Kaur, a 38-year-old mother-of-two from Kapurthala in Punjab, had entered Pakistan via the Wagah Border on November 3, along with a batch of 2,000 pilgrims, to attend festivities related to the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji at the Nankana Sahib.

However, a day after her arrival in Pakistan, Sarabjeet, who is a divorcee, skipped a scheduled visit to the revered Sikh shrine, and went travelled to Sheikhupura with Hussain, where the couple were married according to Muslim traditions, the local police said.

Before the marriage to Hussain, Kaur reportedly adopted a Muslim name, Noor, and converted to Islam, they added.

Why Sarabjeet married Hussain?

Meanwhile, in a video message that has gone viral on social media, Sarabjeet Kaur revealed that she met Hussain on Facebook, and has known him for the better part of nine years. The 38-year-old divorcee also said she married the Pakistani man of her own free will, and marrying him was the reason she had travelled to Pakistan with the Sikh devotees.

“I am a divorcee and wanted to marry Hussain, which is why I came here. I married Hussain of my own free will,” she said.

Sarabjeet’s disappearance came to light when the the India(BHARAT)n pilgrims’ group returned home on November, following which the local authorities in Punjab launched an investigation into the matter.
