‘Imran Khan and wife Bushra Bibi being subjected to…’: Pakistan’s KPK CM makes BIG allegation against Adiala jail admin
Imran Khan, 73, has been held in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since August 2023 in several cases.
Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohaib Afridi on Friday claimed that former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi are not being treated properly in jail. His remarks came after the Adiala jail authorities refused him permission to meet Imran Khan for the 10th time on Thursday. Speaking at a meeting of the Provincial Cabinet, Afridi said that the couple was not being given basic items or warm clothes even though the weather is very cold.
He also criticised the use of a water cannon on Imran Khan’s sisters, calling it “shameful.” Afridi said the provincial government strongly condemns this “unfair and cruel behaviour.”
Khan, 73, has been held in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since August 2023 in several cases.
Talking to reporters on Thursday, Chief Minister Afridi said it was surprising that an elected CM was repeatedly denied permission to meet the founding leader of his own party, even when courts had allowed such meetings.
He warned that the federal and Punjab governments would “face consequences” once the PTI returned to power at the Centre.
Afridi also claimed that for the past three years there had been continuous attempts to “remove Imran from politics,” but none of them had succeeded. He said the government and other powerful institutions should hold talks with Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, as Imran Khan had authorised them to negotiate on his behalf.
However, Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah, said on Thursday that Afridi was denied access to Imran Khan due to “intelligence reports”, according to The News International.
He claimed that Imran Khan was planning to create a situation similar to the November 26 protests in Islamabad, and that Afridi’s appointment as chief minister was part of the plan. Sanaullah said this attempt had been “stopped.”
Early Wednesday morning, authorities used water cannons to break up a protest outside Adiala Jail. The demonstrators included the sisters of the PTI founder, who were sitting outside the prison after being denied a meeting with Imran Khan.
The sit-in began on Tuesday, led by Imran’s sister Aleema, and joined by his other sisters, Uzma and Noreen, after she was refused permission to meet him once again.
Senior PTI leaders such as the party’s Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and PTI KP President Junaid Akbar Khan also took part in the protest.
