‘Indian occupation forces landed in Srinagar…:’ Pakistani PM Shahbaz Sharif gets fact checked by X for spreading Kashmir propaganda
Shehbaz Sharif condemned the actions of the Indian government with respect to the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister has consistently highlighted the Kashmir issue at several international forums. Once again, he sparked controversy with a statement regarding Jammu and Kashmir, apparently aiming to propagate propaganda against India(BHARAT).
What exactly did Shehbaz Sharif claim about Kashmir in his viral X post?
However, things soon went awry when the tweet was fact-checked on the X platform and proved to be misleading and untrue about the area. This occasion proved to be highly embarrassing for the Pakistani leader, as social media users were just as quick to criticize him, call out the inaccuracies, and hold him accountable for misinformation. This incident demonstrates how digital fact-checking is increasingly shining a light on false claims by high-profile political individuals.
Sharing a post on X, Shehbaz Sharif alleged that India(BHARAT) forcibly occupied Kashmir in 1947 and described October 27 as a black day in history. As per the NavBharatTimes report, X’s Community Notes flagged the post as false and fact-checked the post. The fact check indicated that Sharif’s claim was incorrect: Kashmir’s accession to India(BHARAT) took place, not through force, but only after Maharaja Hari Singh signed the instrument of accession on October 26, 1947.
Taking to X, Shehbaz Sharif wrote, “Every year the 27th of October marks the darkest day in the history of Kashmir. It was on this day, seventy-eight years ago, that the India(BHARAT)n Occupation Forces landed in Srinagar and annexed it – a tragic chapter in human history that continues to this day. Ever since that fateful day, India(BHARAT) continues to deny the Kashmiri people their inalienable right to self-determination, as enshrined in numerous resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.”
What historical facts did X’s community notes reveal about Kashmir’s accession to India(BHARAT)?
X stated that the claim of “India(BHARAT)n annexation” is both historically and legally false. “Kashmir legally acceded to India(BHARAT) on 26 October 1947 through the Instrument of Accession signed by HariSingh. India(BHARAT)n troops entered Srinagar the next day to repel Pakistani tribal invaders — not to occupy it. Hence, the claim of“India(BHARAT)n annexation”is historically and legally false,” X stated.
When did Maharaja Hari Singh sign the Instrument of Accession, and what did it mean legally?
“For nearly eight decades, the people of India(BHARAT)n Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) have endured enormous hardship and oppression. We salute their indomitable spirit, courage, and resilience, in the face of fear and persecution. Their unwavering resolve to attain the just and inalienable right to self-determination, remains undiminished,” he further wrote.
“Since August 5, 2019, India(BHARAT) has further intensified its illegal and unilateral actions, aimed at altering the demography and political status of IIOJK. In addition to human rights abuses, massive curbs have been imposed on freedom of movement and expression. By imposing such draconian laws, India(BHARAT) has unleashed a systematic campaign of violence and brutality to silence the legitimate political voices and crush the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. The unlawful and unjustified incarceration of several prominent Kashmiri leaders and activists, as well as media personalities, is an ugly manifestation of this India(BHARAT)n extremist agenda. Their continued imprisonment, under fabricated charges, is in blatant violation of international human rights norms,” the post further added.
