Indian student leaves hostel to ‘buy milk’, goes missing; body found in Russia dam after 19 days, his clothes, phone…
Ajit had gone missing on October 19 after stepping out of his hostel around 11 am, telling friends he would return within half an hour after buying milk.
A 22-year-old medical student from Kaphanwada village in Lakshmangarh in Rajasthan’s Alwar, who had been missing in Russia for almost three weeks, was found dead near a dam in Ufa city, his family confirmed on Thursday. The student, Ajit Singh Chaudhary, had been studying medicine at Bashkir State Medical University since 2023. Ajit went missing on October 19 after leaving his hostel around 11 a.m., telling his friends he would be back in half an hour after buying milk. However, he never returned.
A few days later, local authorities found his near the White River. After 19 days of searching, his body was discovered near a dam connected to the same river.
The India(BHARAT)n Embassy in Moscow informed Ajit’s family and local officials in Alwar about the recovery. His classmates confirmed his identity, and officials said a post-mortem will be done by a medical board before the body is sent back to India(BHARAT). The process of bringing his remains home is expected to take two to three days and is being coordinated by India(BHARAT)n and Russian authorities.
Ajit’s sudden and mysterious death has left his family and village heartbroken. His relatives said they had sold about three bighas of land to pay for his medical studies in Russia. “We sent him there with so many hopes. Now, we’re just waiting for his body to return,” a family member said.
Former Union Minister Jitendra Singh Alwar said that Ajit Singh Chaudhary’s clothes, mobile phone, and shoes had been found near the riverbank 19 days earlier. He claimed that the student might have been the victim of an “unfortunate incident under suspicious circumstances.”
“Ajit, a resident of Kaphanwada village, was sent to Russia by his family with great hopes and through their hard-earned savings to study medicine. The news of his body being found in the river is deeply shocking. This is a heartbreaking moment for the people of Alwar – we have lost a bright young student in unclear circumstances,” Jitendra Singh said in a post on X on Thursday.
He added that Ajit’s family had been devastated ever since his disappearance, constantly praying and hoping for his safe return.
The All India(BHARAT) Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA) – Foreign Medical Students Wing has also written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar regarding the case.
“His friends at the same university have confirmed that the recovered body is Ajit’s,” the association said.
Bashkir State Medical University has not yet released an official statement on the student’s death.
