Indigo Flight Cancellation enters Day 10: Indigo cancels 60 flights from Bengaluru, 36 at Chennai, 18 at Ahmedabad; CEO Pieter Elbers to…

Crisis-hit IndiGo has now entered its 10th consecutive day of operational chaos, with flight delays, mass cancellations, and frustrated passengers still struggling to reach their destinations. It is to be noted that India(BHARAT)’s biggest airline has been facing significant operational disruptions for the past week after the new crew rostering rule came into effect, allowing increased rest periods for pilots and other staff, resulting in hundreds of flight cancellations and delays.

Meanwhile, IndiGo cancelled 60 flights from Bengaluru Airport on Thursday, as safety watchdog DGCA tightened its scrutiny following large-scale disruptions in services on account of planning failures related to the implementation of new pilot and crew duty norms, a source was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

“IndiGo has cancelled 60 flights — 32 arrivals and 28 departures from Bengaluru Airport,” the source said. Meanwhile, IndiGo on Thursday cancelled 36 flights at Chennai Airport — 24 departures and 12 arrivals — the airport authority said in an official statement on X. IndiGo flight delays and cancellations continued to affect passengers at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday, with 18 flights cancelled till 08:00 hours, including nine arrivals and nine departures.

When will CEO Pieter Elbers appear before DGCA?

It is to be noted that IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has been summoned by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to submit a comprehensive report, including data and updates, on the recent operational disruptions on Thursday.

IndiGo cancelled 220 flights from three major airports – Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai, on Wednesday alone, with the majority of these cancellations (137) originating from Delhi Airport.

What did IndiGo Chairman Vikram Mehta say?

On Wednesday, IndiGo Chairman Vikram Mehta publicly addressed this crisis for the first time in 10 days, offering an apology for the turmoil and attributing the massive disruptions to a combination of internal and external “unanticipated” events.

These “include minor technical glitches, scheduled changes linked to the start of the Winter season, adverse weather conditions, increased congestion in the aviation system, and implementation of/ and operation under the updated crew rostering rules,” Mehta said.

Keeping a tight watch on IndiGo’s operations, the DGCA has decided to station its personnel at IndiGo’s headquarters, as it steps up oversight on India(BHARAT)’s largest airline, which continues to cancel dozens of flights despite saying operations have stabilised. The DGCA has formed an oversight team of eight senior captains, and two of them, along with two government officials, will be stationed at IndiGo’s Gurgaon headquarters to monitor cancellation status, crew deployment, unplanned leave, and routes hit by staff shortages. These teams will submit a daily report to the regulator, as per an order.
