International Albinism Awareness Day 2024: Signs, Causes And Treatment of The Rare Genetic Condition

June 13 marks International Albinism Awareness Day. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about albinism- a rare, genetically, inherited condition that causes a lack of pigmentation in the skin, hair and eyes. This year, the main aim is to make collective progress in promoting awareness, understanding and support for individuals living with albinism.

Let’s understand what albinism is, its causes, symptoms and treatment to be more aware of.

What is Albinism

Albinism is an inherited disorder present at birth. It occurs when there’s a defect in one of the several genes responsible for producing or disturbing melanin-the pigment that gives colour to skin, eyes and hair. Most people with albinism have parents who are only carriers of the gene and don’t have symptoms of the condition. However, some types, such as ocular albinism, can occur when a birthing parent passes the gene to a child-assigned male at birth.

In some countries, the majority of people with albinism succumb to skin cancer between the ages of 30 and 40 due to a lack of access to proper health care and sun protection resources.

Symptoms of Albinism

People with albinism will have the following symptoms:

  • An absence of colour in the skin, hair or eyes
  • Lighter than normal colouring of the skin, hair or eyes
  • Patches of skin that have an absence of colour
  • Vision problems that are common due to abnormal development of the retina and optic nerve

Treatment of Albinism

Well, there is no cure for albinism. But natural treatment can help relieve symptoms and damage:

Treatment may include:

As per Healthline, One must use sunglasses to protect the eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Also, prefer protective clothing and sunscreen to protect the skin from UV rays. Use eyeglasses to correct vision problems.
