Is Target on New Year's Day? See holiday hours

Banks, government offices and some retailers are closed on New Year's Day. But plenty of retailers stay open to capture the last gasp of holiday shopping.

Target will be open on New Year's Day 2026

Leading up to the Christmas holiday, Target stores had extended hours — many locations stay open until midnight through much of December before scaling back on Christmas Eve, giving last-minute shoppers more time to cross items off their lists.

But now that Christmas has passed, things are more or less back to normal. Target stores will be open on New Year's Day, but you will want to check your local store’s schedule before heading out, since some stores may close earlier than normal.

Like most major retailers, Target adjusts its schedule around key holidays. Closing on Christmas Day is common these days.

Other major retailers, including Walmart, Costco, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s, all closed on Christmas to give employees time off. On New Year's Day, more retailers stay open.

What is Target's holiday return policy

Like some other mega retailers, Target offers an unusually generous holiday return policy, and New Year's Day is well within the returns window.

The company "gives guests extra time to return purchases made between November 1 and December 24, 2025. The return window begins December 26, 2025," according to a company statement.

There are a few caveats:

  • Electronics & entertainment items (excluding Apple and Beats). Customers have 30 days from December 26 to make a return; items must be returned by January 24, 2026.
  • Apple and Beats products and mobile phones (unlocked or pre-paid). Customers have 14 days from December 26 to make a return; items must be returned by January 8, 2026.
  • Target Plus items. Most Target Plus items (excluding seasonal holiday décor) will have 30 days from December 26 to make a return; items must be returned by January 24, 2026.
