Karur stampede death toll climbs to 41, bomb threat at Vijay’s Chennai home, High Court to hear TVK’s plea today
The death toll from the stampede at actor-turned politician Vijay's campaign rally in Karur has risen to 41. His legal wing has moved Madras High Court seeking an independent probe. Hearing is scheduled today at 2.15 pm.

Chennai: In the latest development in the Karur stampede case, the death toll has risen to 41 after a woman undergoing treatment at a hospital succumbed to her injuries. The 65-year-old Suguna was a resident of Karur district and had been on a ventilator in the ICU. According to doctors, she passed away after failing to respond to treatment. Meanwhile, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s advocates have moved the High Court and requested an independent probe into the case. Vijay’s legal wing, led by S Arivazhagan, on Sunday requested Justice M Dhandapani to refer the case to the SIT or CBI for a transparent investigation. Notably, the plea has been listed for hearing on Monday around 2.15 pm.
Karur Stampede: Suo Motu Proceedings Request
Vijay’s legal team also urged to High Court to take up suo motu proceedings due to the magnitude of the tragedy. TVK functionary Nirmal Kumar stated that Justice Dhandapani advised Vijay’s legal team to file a petition before the Madurai Bench.

Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party TVK also filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission and alleged conspiracy behind the tragedy in which 41 people lost their lives.
Karur Stampede: Bomb Threat
On Sunday night Vijay’s Chennai home came under a security sweep after receiving a bomb threat. Bomb squad and sniffer dogs along with police rushed at Vijay’s Neelankarai residence. A probe into the threat call is underway.
Karur Stampede: State Government Caution
According to sources, Tamil Nadu government on Sunday advised the actor to stay away from Karur Government Hospital, stating that his or his leadership’s presence could worsen the tense situation. Notably, Vijay and his party leaders had intended to visit the hospital where injured people are admitted, but dropped the plan following the request.
According to sources within the party, the actor-politician is experiencing significant distress and has not consumed food since the unfortunate event. He plans to meet with the victims’ families following the court hearing on Monday, contingent upon receiving approval from the relevant authorities.
Karur Stampede: Compensation Announced
On Saturday, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay announced to give Rs 20 lakh to the deceased families and Rs 2 lakh to injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased persons and Rs 50,000 each for the people injured in the tragic incident.
Tamil Nadu government also announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each family of the deceased and Rs 1 lakh for injured.
The death toll on Monday has risen to 41. 18 women, 13 men, five young girls, and five young boys, were among the deceased. So , there are 34 victims reported from the Karur district, along with two victims each from the Erode, Tiruppur, and Dindigul districts, and one victim from the Salem district.
