Kerala local body polls: In a significant development, newly elected representatives across Kerala’s local bodies are set to formally take charge today. As per the recent map, the State Election Commission has planned a structured schedule and guidelines to ensure the transition of power proceeds in an orderly manner.
As per a report carried by IANS news agency, the Commission said that in every body, the senior-most elected member will take the oath first. This senior member will be decided either by age or previous tenure, and the oath will be given by officials authorised by the government. In corporations and district panchayats, the process will be supervised by District Collectors, while returning officers will handle the oath-taking in grama panchayats, block panchayats, and municipal councils.

After the senior member takes the oath, they will then administer the oath to all other elected members. The Commission will send written notifications to every elected representative, clearly mentioning the time and venue of the ceremony. The oath will be administered at 10 a.m. in grama panchayats, block panchayats, district panchayats, and municipal councils, and at 11.30 a.m. in corporations.

Schedule for election of Mayors and Municipal Chairpersons
The election of Mayors and Municipal Chairpersons has been scheduled for December 26 at 10.30 a.m., followed by the election of Deputy Mayors and Vice-Chairpersons at 2.30 p.m. On December 27, elections for presidents of grama, block, and district panchayats will be conducted at 10.30 a.m., with Vice-Presidents to be elected that afternoon at 2.30 p.m. A quorum of at least half of the eligible voting members will be required for the leadership elections.
