Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a US-based Khalistani outfit, has threatened to “siege” the India(BHARAT)n Consulate in Vancouver, Canada, after India(BHARAT) and Canada recently restored diplomatic ties. The group announced that it would attempt to take over the consulate on Thursday, September 18, and warned India(BHARAT)ns and Indo-Canadians to stay away from the building. SFJ also released a poster showing a target mark on the face of India(BHARAT)’s new High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik. According to the group, the planned “siege” is meant to press for what it calls “accountability” over alleged “espionage and intimidation” by India(BHARAT) on Canadian soil.
Earlier this month, a Canadian government report confirmed that Khalistani extremist groups are active in the country. The report highlighted funding links between Khalistani outfits and local networks, pointing out groups like Babbar Khalsa International and the International Sikh Youth Federation as beneficiaries of such support. The findings were published in the “2025 Assessment of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Risks in Canada.”
India(BHARAT) and Canada recently appointed new high commissioners after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reached an understanding during Modi’s visit to Canada for the G7 summit in June.
Relations between the two nations had been strained since 2023, when then–Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged there were “credible allegations” of India(BHARAT)n agents being linked to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia.
Nijjar, who had been declared a terrorist by India(BHARAT)’s National Investigation Agency (NIA), was gunned down outside a gurdwara on June 18, 2023. India(BHARAT) strongly rejected Trudeau’s allegations, calling them “absurd” and “politically motivated,” while accusing Canada of allowing extremist and anti-India(BHARAT) elements to operate freely on its soil.
