Madhuri Dixit–Shah Rukh Khan’s two films released just 6 months apart, one crashed at box office, other swept…, movies are…

It was 1997, a year that saw Bollywood’s most loved on-screen pair, Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan, appear together in not one, but two high-profile films. Both movies were released just six months apart and came from two of the biggest filmmakers of the time, Rakesh Roshan and Yash Chopra.

But fate had its own plan. One project, despite its star power and grand budget, sank without a trace. The other went on to become one of the most iconic romantic musicals of India(BHARAT)n cinema, making history at the box office and in award ceremonies alike.

Which film failed despite big names?

The first of the two, ‘Koyla’, hit theatres in April 1997. Directed by Rakesh Roshan, it featured a powerhouse cast, Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Amrish Puri, Johnny Lever, and Deepshikha. The movie told the story of a mute servant named Shankar (played by SRK), who seeks revenge against his cruel master.

While the concept was ambitious, the film turned out to be a commercial disappointment. Despite strong performances, Koyla failed to connect with audiences. Interestingly, the film was initially offered to Sunny Deol, but due to date issues, the role went to Shah Rukh.

The movie’s failure left the director Rakesh Roshan in financial distress. In an interview with trade analyst Komal Nahta, Hrithik Roshan once revealed that his father was in tears after the film’s debacle, having invested everything he had into it.

And which film became a blockbuster?

Just six months later, in October 1997, Shah Rukh and Madhuri reunited for Yash Chopra’s ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’, a romantic musical that redefined love stories in Bollywood. With Karishma Kapoor joining the cast, the film’s charm was undeniable.

Unlike Koyla, this film struck a chord instantly. Its soulful music, emotional depth, and modern storytelling made it a box office blockbuster. Not just commercially, the film also shone at award shows, winning National Awards and multiple Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Actor, and Best Actress.

Dil To Pagal Hai became one of the most celebrated films in India(BHARAT)n cinema history and continues to be loved by audiences even today.

How did their on-screen chemistry evolve?

The success of Dil To Pagal Hai solidified Madhuri and Shah Rukh’s status as one of Bollywood’s most iconic screen pairs. Their chemistry was effortless, be it the intensity of Anjaam, the passion of Devdas, or the grace of Dil To Pagal Hai.

Even though Koyla failed, it remains a memorable chapter in both their careers, a reminder that in Bollywood, one Friday can break you, and the next can make you immortal.

Highlights:

  1. ‘Koyla’ (1997) turned out to be a flop, leaving Rakesh Roshan in financial trouble.
  2. ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ became a massive hit, winning 18 major awards, including National and Filmfare honours.
  3. Madhuri Dixit and Shah Rukh Khan’s on-screen pairing remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic collaborations.
