Maldives issues clarification after India slams derogatory remarks against PM Modi

India has formally expressed serious concerns on the disparaging remarks made by a number of Maldives politicians against Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his recent visit to Lakshadweep, amid a significant diplomatic storm. The Indian High Commissioner reportedly brought up the issue with the Mohamed Muizzu-led government in Male, according to several media sources.

Leading Maldivian ministers made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Modi on social media earlier on January 5 in response to the latter’s recent visit to Lakshadweep. In her comments on PM Modi’s images, Mariyam Shiuna, the Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts, called him a “clown” and a “puppet of Israel.”

Fearing for its reputation, the Maldivian government said in a statement that it was aware of disparaging comments made on social media against foreign dignitaries and high-ranking officials, but that these comments did not necessarily reflect the government’s position.

Furthermore, it declared that the current administration will not think twice about taking legal action against anyone who makes such disparaging statements.

“The Government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government of Maldives…Moreover, the relevant authorities of the Government will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks,” the statement said.

On January 4, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted some images from his most recent trip to Lakshadweep. The prime minister extolled the virtues of Lakshadweep, omitting any mention of the Maldives.

“Recently, I had the opportunity to be among the people of Lakshadweep. I am still in awe of the stunning beauty of its islands and the incredible warmth of its people. I had the opportunity to interact with people in Agatti, Bangaram and Kavaratti. I thank the people of the islands for their hospitality,” PM Modi had said in a statement on social media platform X.

It is noteworthy that relations between New Delhi and Male have reached a new low ever since pro-China President Mohamed Muizzu’s unexpected victory in September’s presidential election. To win over Beijing, he actually gave the order to remove Indian armed forces from the island nation. The PM’s criticizing remarks will now worsen the situation in the relationship.
