McDonald’s answers a major question for MLK Day 2026

Fast food has long been a defining part of American culture, and McDonald's continues to lead in the category. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, commonly referred to as MLK Day, is a federal holiday observed on the third Monday in January. The day honors the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., the iconic civil rights leader who played a pivotal role in advocating for racial equality during the American Civil Rights Movement.

Although schools, banks, and government offices typically close in observance of the holiday, many businesses and essential workers continue operating as usual, since there is no law that requires them to shut down. However, restaurants and retailers often set their own schedules, which can cause hours to fluctuate and leave customers wondering which locations will remain open and for how long.

Is McDonald’s open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2026?

McDonald's (MCD) has built a reputation as one of the most reliable fast-food chains during holidays, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2026 is no exception.

The company has confirmed that all U.S. McDonald's locations will remain open nationwide over the three-day weekend.

That said, hours may vary by location, as most McDonald's restaurants are independently owned and operated by franchisees. Still, as one of the world's largest fast-food chains, operating more than 40,000 locations across more than 100 countries, finding a nearby open restaurant is unlikely to be an issue.

McDonald’s 2026 winter menu

McDonald's has unveiled its 2026 winter menu, bringing back beloved seasonal items, as well as launching new Happy Meals and value deals available nationwide for a limited time. 

Returning highlights include the fan-favorite Holiday Pie and the McRib sandwich.

New 2026 Happy Meals

• Disneyland Resort 70th Anniversary: Every Happy Meal includes two characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, or Star Wars, totaling 70 toys and 35 collectible pairings. The promotion launched on December 2, 2025, and typically runs for about a month. (Source:McDonald's Corporate)
• Pokémon 30th Anniversary: The McDonald's x Pokémon TCG Happy Meal is expected to include four-card booster packs and features themed packaging.
