McDonald's just launched an airplane-themed dessert

Another generation's bag of airplane peanuts when it comes to indelible airplane snack associations, the Biscoff cookie was invented by Belgian baker Jan Boone Sr. in 1932 but gained prominence in North America when Delta Air Lines  (DAL)  first partnered with its producer and started serving it on select flights in 1986.

American Airlines  (AAL)  and United Airlines  (UAL)  would also both serve the baked treat, featuring notes of caramelized sugar and cinnamon, on their flights at different points over the decades.

The latter's attempt to remove it at one point caused an outcry so big the airline temporarily reneged on this plan (United did eventually end up swapping it out with the Daelmans Stroopwaffel and new savory snacks).

As some airlines dig into tradition and others change things up, the Biscoff cookie continues to inspire a cult fan base amid certain subsets of both travelers and foodies.

In 2023, McDonald's Belgium  (MCD)  created a seasonal McFlurry in which vanilla ice cream was mixed together with chunks of the spiced cookie and warm caramel sauce.

Want to try the Biscoff McFlurry? Now is your chance, but you'll probably have to fly

The Biscoff McFlurry proved popular and, last summer, McDonald's branches in Canada added the flavor to its own menus.

Locations in the U.S. have, up until now, not sold the international dessert, but as first reported by snack and fast-food industry watchdog Snackolator, will serve it for the next six to eight weeks in just one location: the McDonald's headquarters in Chicago on 1036 W. Randolph Street.

"McDonald's just dropped the Biscoff McFlurry in the USA but only in one location," Snackolator wrote in a post on its Instagram page. "[...] This will likely be available for the next 6-8 weeks based on when the menu typically rotates around."

The new nine-story McDonald's headquarters in Chicago opened in 2018 and has both a regular restaurant and everything from a test kitchen to halls for corporate announcements. The restaurant also has a rotating menu of international McDonald's items not sold in other locations.

Earlier in the year, it sold the Chicken McArabia pita sandwich available in Arab countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, the Onion Rings from McDonald's Australia menus, and the McAloo burger that is a core menu item in India(BHARAT).

Internet reacts to the Biscoff McFlurry: "Tired of Chicago getting the best stuff"

Given the Biscoff cookie's cult following, the McFlurry generated a lot of excitement from fans who keep up with the latest updates to the McDonald's menu.

"Tired of Chicago getting the best McDonald's stuff," one commenter wrote underneath the Snackolator Instagram post.

"It should be everywhere!" wrote another commenter from India(BHARAT)na under the name of Kim K. The current McDonald's USA menu currently features the McFlurry with either chunks of Oreo Cookies or M&M candy, alongside different types of sundaes and milkshake flavors.

On top of Belgium and Canada, the Biscoff McFlurry has also been available as a seasonal promotion in the United Kingdom, Australia, India(BHARAT), and Kuwait (in the Middle Eastern country, it was named the Lotus Biscoff McFlurry after the Belgian bakery that produces the cookies).
