A plus-sized model, Sara Milliken is making headlines after being the winner of the National American Miss Alabama 2024 pageant in May. The 23-year-old bagged the top prize, however, her achievement was short-lived as the trolls quickly began taunting the winner about her appearance. She openly slammed the trolls who called her with inappropriate names. She respectfully hit back at the trolls but also educated the people that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and it’s important to respect one’s body.

Who is Sara Milliken?

Sara Milliken is a model from Atmore in Alabama. This is not her first time competing in the pageant as she competed for the crown twice before, scooping the win on her third try. Well, days before the pageant, she was met with a confidence-shattering comment. She said, “Days before the pageant, I had a mean boy tell me I was “too ugly” to win,” she said, adding, “I was humiliated and hung my head low…”

Sara decided that she wouldn’t compete again and stayed away from the ramp for seven years. However, at the age of 23, she decided to participate again and give her the best. This time, she became triumphed as Miss Alabama 2024. “This weekend I returned to the NAM stage to prove to myself I didn’t give up. I could do this. I was more than the mean things that was said to me.”

On her Pageant Planet profile, Sara revealed that she wanted to be ‘the very first plus-size NAM Miss Alabama to show other women they can do anything they put their mind to’. She added: “I plan to shatter glass ceilings in pageantry to create a path for other women to chase their dreams- no matter their shape or size.” The model is also a podcast host on Girls Gotta Slow, which aims to promote confidence and empower women. The weekly podcast talks about body positivity, mental health, women empowerment and navigating girlhood.

Sara Milliken Response on Backlash For Her Achievement

Sara recently made global headlines for her tactful manner in handling social media trolls. While many trolled her, she believes that there are several people out there who have supported her.

While addressing the backlash that she was receiving, Sara said, “Things you type online can have a lasting impression on people.” She also told the news outlet WKRG, “No matter what your body looks like or where you come from, you can do anything you set your mind to.”

She added, “The best way to prevent this from happening is by simply spreading kindness. Our mama’s taught us best- If you can’t say something nice don’t say nothing at all.” No matter what your body looks like, no matter where you come from, you can do anything you set your mind to,’ Sara said following her victory.

Hundreds of Sara’s supporters have since flooded her inbox. Her positivity has garnered praise from people across the world. One user commented. “So, proud of her”, another said, “She is an amazing, sweet young woman,” One user also commented, “She is a heart of gold.”
