This jet is equipped with AI, and the company plans to fly it with its exclusive Hivemind software. Shield AI launched it on ‘Back to the Future’ Day, October 21. This jet does not require a pilot to fly, nor does it require a runway for take-off or landing. The X-BAT is presented as a scale model, but it will be equipped with jet engines and thrust vectoring nozzles, giving it speeds exceeding Mach 4 (5000 kmph).

According to a Defence News report, this AI fighter jet has a range of over 2,000 nautical miles and can carry air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons. The X-BAT’s most significant feature is its vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) system. It can take off and land without a runway using a special launch-and-recovery vehicle. This means the jet can operate from ships, islands, or other locations without runways.

When is the first Takeoff and Landing?

Shield AI stated that the X-BAT will perform its first vertical take-off and landing in 2026. Full validation is expected by 2028, and production will begin in 2029. The company also discussed partnerships with the industry that will help scale its production. While its price was not disclosed, the company claims it will be cheaper than popular jets like the F-16.
