Fresh elections to the House of Representatives will be conducted on March 5. The announcement is made as the nation aims to regain stability following weeks of intense protests by GenZ.

Kathmandu: In a major development in Nepal, which witnessed a massive Gen Z uprising, President Ramchandra Paudel on Saturday announced that the House of Representatives elections will be held within six months. The country’s interim government has set the polling date for March 5. The major announcement comes as the neighbouring country is on its path to stabilisation after weeks of violent Gen Z protests that claimed over 50 lives. More than 1,300 people sustained injuries, and thousands of prisoners fled jails.
What Did President Paudel Say?
President Paudel in a statement said, “The people have got the opportunity to move forward on the path of a more advanced democracy by holding the elections to the House of Representatives within six months. Therefore, I sincerely appeal to all parties to cooperate in the work of pleasing the people and holding the elections to be held on March 5 by making good use of the opportunity obtained with great tact.”

On Saturday, after weeks of violent protests against the KP Oli-led government, GenZ and citizens of Nepal gathered outside the Bouddhanath Stupa and held a candle march remembering those who lost their lives during the anti-corruption protests.

On Saturday, interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki visited a civil hospital and met injured GenZ protestors. Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population confirmed that as many as 51 people lost their lives during the demonstrations. Out of 51, including 30 who died from gunshot wounds and 21 from burns.
Is Nepal Returning To Normalcy?
The neighbouring country, which faced nationwide curfew and unrest, is slowly and steadily returning to normalcy. The curfew was lifted a day after Karki was sworn in as interim PM.
PM Modi congratulated Karki on assuming charge as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. he expressed confidence that Nepal is in safe hands and she would guide the country toward peace and stability.
