Netflix Kills a Service So Popular It Lasted 25 Years

It's surprising it lasted this long.

After 25 years of operation, Netflix  (NFLX) - Get Free Report announced Tuesday that 2023 will see the end of the DVD rental service that first put the media giant on the map. The streaming service will stop shipping discs on Sept. 29; they will continue to accept DVD returns until the end of October.

Netflix will automatically cancel its users' subscriptions -- which cost between $10 and $20 per month -- to the DVD rental service on Sept. 29.

"After an incredible 25 year run, we’ve decided to wind down DVD.com later this year," Ted Sarandos, Netflix's co-CEO said in a statement. "Our goal has always been to provide the best service for our members but as the business continues to shrink that’s going to become increasingly difficult. So we want to go out on a high, and will be shipping our final discs on September 29, 2023."

For posterity, users will be able to download a PDF detailing their rental history until Oct. 27, 2023.

The move comes on the same day Netflix announced first-quarter earnings for 2023, reporting little growth.
