Nitish Kumar became Bihar’s CM for just 7 days for first time, what happened in his first innings as CM

Nitish Kumar is taking the oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar on November 20, 2025, after the grand victory in the Bihar Assembly Election 2025. This will mark Kumar’s tenth term as Bihar’s CM. There have been multiple instances in Bihar’s politics where Nitish has resigned, formed new alliances, and dissolved the government. After all the past chaos, he’s becoming the Chief Minister of the state once again. There’s one extraordinary instance when he became the CM for just 7 days.

When was Nitish Kumar the CM of Bihar for just 10 days?

Nitish Kumar became the Chief Minister of Bihar from the Samata Party for only 7 days in 2000. The short tenure of his chief ministry was because of his government failing to attain the required electoral numbers to lead the state.

Later, he made ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2005. During this time, he attained an absolute majority.

How many times has Nitish Kumar become Bihar’s CM?

Nitish Kumar is the primary face of politics in Bihar. After 2005, the chief ministry of Nitish continued in 2010. Later, in 2013, he broke his alliance with the BJP government as PM Narendra Modi was announced as the candidate for the position.

In 2014, JD(U) contested the assembly elections and lost. As a result, he resigned and shifted the position to Jitan Ram Manjhi. After almost a year, he became the CM again as Kumar made an alliance with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and Congress.

Nitish Kumar dissolved the then-government and made a new alliance with BJP in 2017 and became the CM. This continued until 2020, as Nitish dissolved the government in 2022. He again made an alliance with RJD and Congress and became the CM face, only to re-ally with BJP in 2024 and become the CM.

Nitish Kumar’s government in Bihar Assembly Election 2025

Nitish Kumar’s party, Janata Dal (United), secured 85 MLA seats in the 2025 Assembly Election. In 2020, the party had won 43 seats.
