Health Ministry of Oman has passed a rule making premarital medical examinations for couples mandatory from January 1.
Premarital Medical Examinations Mandatory: Middle East country Oman has made premarital medical examinations mandatory. Now, from January 1, it is mandatory for all the citizens of the Middle East country, who intend to marry, to follow the royal decree. According to the Health Ministry, premarital medical exams are compulsory for all couples, and they must complete the exam before they finalise the marriage contract. The couple will receive a fitness certificate after the examination, Khaleej Times reported. The exam is also compulsory even if one party is non-Omani. Premarital medical examinations have come into force from January 1.
The Royal Decree
It is to be noted that reform was included in Royal Decree No. 111/2025. The rule of Premarital Medical Examination, which is issued by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, apply even if one person is non-Omani. It doesn’t change if marriage is concluded inside or outside the Sultanate.
It means that people of Oman, who are planning to get hitched, are required to under the medical test before the marriage contract.
Premarital Medical Tests Compulsory
According to the ministry, the main purpose of making the test mandatory is to detect carriers of hereditary blood disorders as well as infections like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS.
The Ministry stated that the test will curb the spread of genetic, hereditary, and infectious diseases in the country, adding that early detection of these diseases will help ministry to reduce the birth of children with hereditary blood disorders, alleviates health and financial burdens on families.
Why Has Oman Government Taken The Move Now?
- Notably, premarital screening had been optional in the Middle East country since 1999.
- Only 42 percent people participated last year.
- The low participation led the Ministry to make the screening mandatory.
- The Ministry clarified that “mandatory” means couples are required to undergo the medical examination.
