‘Not a common crime but an attack on entire judicial system’: Supreme Court’s strict observation on…

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has expressed concern over the increasing incidents of online fraud and digital arrests in the country. The court has taken the initiative and sought answers from the Central Government and the CBI on these matters.

‘Attack on entire judicial system’

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi of the Supreme Court stated that this is not a common crime. Forging court names, seals, and orders is a direct attack on the entire judicial system.

A 73-year-old couple in Ambala district, Haryana, was duped of Rs 1.05 crore between September 3 and 16. They digitally arrested the couple by showing them fake orders from the Supreme Court and investigating agencies and forged the signatures of judges.

Supreme Court takes suo moto cognizance

Following the incident, the woman wrote a letter to Chief Justice BR Gavai on September 21, explaining the situation. Following this, the Supreme Court took action on the matter itself.

The woman reported that the fraudsters posed as CBI and ED officials. Through audio and video calls, they showed the couple fake court orders bearing court seals and fake judge signatures. The fraudsters then intimidated them into transferring Rs 1.05 crore to various bank accounts.

Delhiites defrauded of Rs 1,100 crore in 2024, Rs 1000 crore in 2025

According to Delhi Police data, cybercriminals defrauded people in Delhi of approximately Rs 1,000 crore in 2025. Investment scams, digital arrests, and boss scams were the most common methods of fraud this year.

In 2024, the people of Delhi were cheated of approximately Rs 1,100 crore. At that time, the police and banks were able to freeze only about 10% of the defrauded funds. However, in 2025, the Delhi Police, in collaboration with banks, succeeded in freezing approximately 20% of the defrauded funds.

Orders to CBI and Haryana Police

The Supreme Court has sought the Attorney General’s assistance and directed the Haryana government and the Ambala Cyber Crime Unit to submit a full report of the investigation to the court.

The court stated that a nationwide network of such crimes is emerging. Therefore, not just a single case investigation, but a national-level action by the central and state police is essential.
