Dharmendra has been making headlines amid growing health concerns. After being admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital for the past few days, he was discharged on Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, Hema Malini and Esha Deol strongly denied rumours of Dharmendra’s death on social media. Amid his health problems, there’s one aspect of Dharmendra’s life that’s not widely known. The legendary superstar married twice in his life—first to Prakash Kaur in 1954, when he was just 19, and second to actress Hema Malini in 1980. But before starting his Bollywood career, the Sholay star had a deep crush on this legendary actress-singer.

This actor inspired Dharmendra to do films

Dharmendra, one of the highest-paid stars in the Hindi film industry, once revealed that Suraiya inspired him to pursue a career in cinema. He admitted that his love for films began after watching Suraiya’s amazing acting. He also revealed that he was so mesmerized by Suraiya’s beauty and voice that he watched her 1949 film Dillagi nearly 40 times. Suraiya, who ruled Bollywood from the mid-1940s to the early 1950s, appeared in nearly 70 films and lent her voice to 338 songs, many of which have since become timeless classics.

Suraiya’s iconic films

Her most famous roles came in Vidya (1948), Pyar Ki Jeet (1948), Badi Bahen (1949), Omar Khayyam (1946), Parwana (1947), Dastaan (1950), Deewana (1952), and Mirza Ghalib (1954). While Dharmendra was madly in love with Suraiya, she was in love with the legendary actor Dev Anand, with whom she starred in several hit films.

They were in a relationship for four years, from 1948 to 1951. They even decided to marry each other, but Suraiya’s family prevented it. She remained unmarried, retired from acting in 1963, and passed away in 2004 at the age of 75 after battling several health problems. Among those who attended her funeral was her lifelong admirer, Dharmendra, who once admitted that she was the inspiration behind his decision to enter the world of cinema.
