Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway: What comes as a good news for the commuters of the Pathankot-Jammu-Katra route is that they can soon expect a hassle-free and fast journey from next year. The Central government has decided to complete the 670-km Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway by March 2026, if this goes as planned. As per the Road Transport and Highways Ministry, about 143 km of the expressway comes within the limit of Jammu and Kashmir. The work which is done under five separate packages is progressing in full swing.
What Did Nitin Gadkari Say?
“Construction on these sections began on September 26, 2022, and is now in full swing, with a revised completion date of March 31, 2026”, Nitin Gadkari said in Lok Sabha in February this year.
Notably, the expressway work in Jammu and Kashmir is divided into five packages for better process – 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18. All these parts are under construction.
The Delhi-Katra expressway
According to sources, the package 14 which is 44.6 km long, covers the Pathankot-Gurdaspur Road (NH-54) which is located near Gurha Baildaran. The stretch is being executed by Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd. The estimated cost of this stretch is Rs 3,044.02 crore.
The Package 16 which is 11.8km long is being built to provide better connectivity to Jammu Airport.
Package 17 has two parts – a 13.3-km brownfield section of NH-44 and 15.62 km greenfield section. The brownfield section is stretched between Domel and Katra. The estimated cost of this section is 15.62 km. The greenfield section is stretched between Domel and Katra and the estimated cost is Rs 1547.91 crore.
The government has set a two-year deadline to complete the project. The revised deadline of the project is February 19, 2026.
Package 18’s work is being executed by Gawar Construction Ltd. Under the package, the existing national highway NH-44 will be upgraded between Sidhra and Ban villages.
Notably, PM Modi laid the foundation stone of the expressway on April 22, 2022.
