Nepal experienced a major political crisis in September 2025, as Gen-Z protesters launched a campaign against the Oli government, protesting corruption, censorship, and economic inequality. Oli was forced to resign as Nepal Prime Minister amid pressure.

KP Sharma Oli, on September 9th, resigned as Prime Minister amid pressure from the Gen-Z protests in Nepal. The Nepalese government was swept away by the storm of people taking to the streets to protest corruption and nepotism. Ten days after resigning, Oli made his first public appearance.

Oli was flown by an army helicopter on Thursday from the Shivapuri military barracks to Bhaktapur, where a house has been rented for him. Oli left the Prime Minister’s official residence in an army helicopter after the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9. Oli was kept safe in the military barracks in Shivapuri. Protesters set fire to his private home in Kathmandu, his ancestral home in Jhapa, and his home in Damak. Consequently, another rented house was found for him. He was transported by an army helicopter.

Oli was greeted by a few supporters upon his arrival at his new rented home. Nepali youth have staged violent protests against the social media ban and corruption, resulting in the deaths of more than 20 people. Several government buildings, including the Parliament building and Oli’s personal residence, were set on fire.

Oli submitted his resignation to President Ram Chandra Poudel, which was accepted on September 10. Following his resignation, Oli and other ministers took refuge in the army’s Shivapuri barracks, and rumors arose about their whereabouts.
