Papua New Guinea struck by 6.4 magnitude earthquake

New Delhi: Papua New Guinea was struck by an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale at around 10:31:28 GMT on Monday, 22 December 2025. This information was shared by the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.
It is reported that the quake’s epicentre was located at a depth of 108.8 kilometres, with preliminary coordinates placing it at 5.78 degrees south latitude and 145.50 degrees east longitude, reported News.Az reports, citing Xinhua.
The local authorities have started an assessment of the potential impacts and any likely aftershocks that could occur after this strong quake.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) also confirmed that a 6.4 magnitude earthquake has struck Papua New Guinea, around 26 miles northeast of Goroka.
“There was a green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses, meaning there is a low likelihood of either due to the remoteness of the earthquake, despite its strength,” said the USGS.
The local authorities have started an assessment of the potential impacts and any likely aftershocks that could occur after this strong quake.
