Red alert in Tamil Nadu: Schools and colleges in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, 12 other districts to remain CLOSED today amid heavy rain; Check details

Schools across Tamil Nadu were supposed to reopen on Wednesday, October 22, after the Diwali holidays. However, due to heavy rain caused by the active northeast monsoon, holidays have been declared again in several districts. The India(BHARAT) Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for extremely heavy rain in many coastal and delta districts. Officials said the move was necessary to keep students safe, even if it affects the school schedule.

In response to the severe weather warning, 12 district administrations have proactively announced holidays today, October 22, for schools and colleges in Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai,  Kallakurichi, Ranipet, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram and Cuddalore as well as for Puducherry and Karaikal. Chennai District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Jagade has also declared a holiday for all schools alone in the city today.

The continuous rainfall since Diwali is being caused by a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, along with another system over the Arabian Sea. These weather systems are expected to bring widespread rain to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until at least October 24, affecting both coastal and inland areas.

Red alert in Tamil Nadu districts

The weather department has issued heavy rain warnings for several parts of Tamil Nadu because of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. A red alert has been announced for Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

An orange alert, meaning the rainfall will likely be very heavy, has been given for Chengalpattu, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts today. It also covers Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur for the next three days.

For Wednesday, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Nagapattinam are under an orange alert.
