What is ammonium nitrate and how dangerous it is?
Ammonium nitrate is an industrial chemical commonly used as fertilizers and as an explosive in excavation and mining. It is an oxidizing agent that is considered relatively safe if stored properly and without contamination. However, if it leaks, mixes with fuel, or is stored unsafely, it can be extremely dangerous. A large amount of ammonium nitrate could have completely destroyed nearby markets like Chandni Chowk.
According to reports, large quantities of ammonium nitrate can explode if exposed to high temperatures. Storing this chemical near large fuel tanks, in large quantities, and in poorly ventilated areas can cause a massive explosion. The larger the quantity, the greater the risk of explosion.
