According to various estimates, Russia has about 37 trillion cubic meters (tcm) reserves of natural gas, accounting for more than 20 percent of the total gas reserves in the world. Some of its largest reserves are located in Siberia and the Arctic region.

Notably, while US is also a large producer of oil and gas, but its reserves are limited compared to Russia. Oil and gas exports are the backbone of the Russian economy, which is supplied to countries across Europe and Asia via massive pipelines.

How US extracts natural gas?

Natural gas is a vital part of the US economy, and is extracted using hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and horizontal drilling technology, because it lack massive natural reserves unlike Russia. Fracking involves boring deep holes into rock, and pouring in water, sand and chemicals to break it up and extract the gas.

Canada and Mexico are the largest buyers of US gas, with Mexico exporting 66 billion cubic meters of gas from the US in 2023. The US also exports its gas to other allies, including the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy and Japan.
