Sharmin Segal’s ‘Nothingness’ Remark on Meena Kumari Gets a Befitting Reply From Late Actor’s Stepson

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar rose to the top of Netflix’s list of Indian series. Though every actor on the show received accolades for their work, Sharmin Segal faced backlash on social media for her acting abilities. Earlier in an interview, the actor claimed that while performing her role in the period drama, she was inspired by Meena Kumari‘s ‘nothingness’ in Pakeezah. As a result of Sharmin’s remarks, the late actor’s stepson Tajdar Amrohi has responded angrily, arguing that Pakeezah and Heeramandi are not comparable.

Meena Kumari’s Son on Sharmin Segal’s ‘Nothingness’ Statement

In an interview with Zoom TV, Tajdar said, “Zameen aasman ka fark hai between ‘Heeramandi’ and ‘Pakeezah.’ Don’t compare the two. Nobody can make ‘Pakeezah’ again. Neither Meena Kumari nor Kamal Amrohi can ever be born again.”

I don’t know Sharmin. But no, I can’t relate to her statement on nothingness, ” Amrohi added. He went on to say that he thought everyone had different tastes and that it was possible that someone may have preferred Heeramandi over Pakeezah. Tajdar himself hasn’t watched the complete series yet.

For those who don’t know, Sharmin Segal explained the thinking behind her portrayal of Alamzeb in response to criticism over her lifeless looks on the show. She claimed to have drawn inspiration from Meena Kumari’s portrayal in Pakezaah, in which she expresses her heartbreak by staring into oblivion. “Meena Kumari was one of my inspirations. I tried to bring Meena Kumari’s nothingness from Pakeezah into my character in Heeramandi, ” she said.

He thinks that SLB attempts to take shots in a manner that is quite similar to his father’s. Tajdar remembers asking Bhansali, “Where my Dad used to sit, where my Dad walked,” during his visit to Kamalistan Studio. He stepped on the spot where my father was sitting out of pure respect. I never saw him again after that, which was fifteen years ago.

Speaking about Pakeezah, it took eight years to create the film, which was released on February 4, 1972. Meena Kumari left this world with a film that evoked strong feelings in moviegoers, only 56 days after the film was released.
