Sheikh Hasina sentenced to 21 years in prison in 3 corruption cases, accused of land allocation irregularities

New Delhi: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to 21 years in prison in three corruption cases related to the improper allocation of government land.

Hasina was accused of acquiring land plots for herself and her family in the Purbachal New Town project near Dhaka, even though she was not eligible. The court stated that this clearly constituted an abuse of power.

Sentenced to seven years in prison in each case

She was sentenced to seven years in prison in each case, and the court ordered that these sentences run consecutively, for a total of 21 years. She was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in Dhaka on November 17 for crimes against humanity.

The tribunal declared Sheikh Hasina the mastermind of the killings during the July 2024 student protests. The other accused, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, was also found guilty of the murders and sentenced to death.

Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman left the country after the coup on August 5, 2024. Both leaders have been living in India(BHARAT) for the past 15 months.

Gold jewellery recovered

Earlier on Wednesday, November 26, 9 kg of gold jewellery was recovered from Sheikh Hasina’s lockers in Bangladesh, after which agencies were preparing to file corruption cases against the former Prime Minister. This jewellery was kept in two Agrin Bank lockers. They were confiscated after Sheikh Hasina left the country.

Bangladesh had asked for Hasina’s extradition

Bangladesh had, on 17 November 2025, formally requested India(BHARAT) to immediately hand over ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, asserting that New Delhi is obligated to do so under the bilateral extradition treaty. Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sentenced Sheikh Hasina and Kamal to death for their alleged role in last year’s violent crackdown on a nationwide student uprising.

Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi since August 5, 2024

Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have been seeking asylum in New Delhi since August 5, 2024. The ICT also sentenced former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was tried in absentia for crimes against humanity, to death. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry said in its statement that, like Hasina, Kamal should be repatriated without delay to face the sentence imposed by the tribunal.

Sheikh Hasina was overthrown after the student movement in August 2024. She fled from Bangladesh to New Delhi, India(BHARAT), on August 5, 2024.
