Sima Taparia of Netflix's 'Indian Matchmaking' fame takes a dig at 'highly educated girls' for high divorce rates

Who can forget Netflix’s popular matchmaker ‘Sima Aunty‘, whose motive is to match Indians looking for life partners worldwide on the show Indian Matchmaking? In the latest, Sima Taparia in real-life has made yet another controversial statement about people seeking divorce as ‘egoistic’. She also listed ‘highly educated girls’ as unlikely to listen to marriage advice. In a recent conversation with Mashable India for The Bombay Journey, the OTT personality highlighted the role of education and independence in modern Indian marriages.

On people seeking divorce as ‘egoistic’

Sima Taparia, known for her controversial comments, has often been targeted for her contentious remarks and problematic perspectives in the past. While demonstrating the same in a recent interview, the OTT star engaged in discussions on various subjects including ‘divorce’, where she branded people seeking separation as ‘egoistic’ and lacking patience.

She further stated, “Those I have matched haven’t divorced yet. But if it happens, it is because they lack patience, flexibility, are egoistic, and don’t want to adjust. That’s how problems are created. They lack values of giving, sharing and caring.”

On highly educated women

Sima Taparia went on to criticise the ‘highly educated and independent women’ for refusing to conform to others’ expectations. She continued that people are getting separated “because there is no patience, no adjustment, egoism, ladkiya itna padh likh lete hai toh they say why should I listen to anybody (Highly educated girls don’t listen to anybody)”.

On different lifestyles

Commenting on the lifestyle differences between NRIs and Indians, Sima Taparia emphasised the reliance of NRIs on themselves for household chores and other tasks. Furthermore, she disclosed that she selectively picks her clients and doesn’t work with everyone.

On matching a South Indian man

As part of the same conversation, Sima Taparia while discussing matchmaking for a man from south on her show Indian Matchmaking said, “There is a very influential family in the South, their son is very dark. In the south, people are generally dark. His mom’s criteria list was very long. But thankfully they found the girl they were looking for. Not many people have such criteria but who doesn’t want a beautiful daughter-in-law?”

Sima Aunty, who revealed having a documentary made on her titled ‘A Suitable Girl’, further stated how women must not be too ambitious as it is not easy to fulfil a woman’s ambitions. She also revealed that she got married in 1983, when she was 19.

Through her show Indian Matchmaking, which premiered on Netflix in 2020, matchmaker Sima Taparia guides clients based in the US as well as India in the arranged marriage process, while offering an inside look at the custom in a modern era.

The show has three seasons on streaming giant Netflix, with the third season premiering in April this year. She has also been featured in A Suitable Girl, a 2017 documentary based on her life.
