New Delhi: A strong earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter Scale hit Taiwan on Saturday, 27 December 2025, according to the country’s weather agency. Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, was jolted by strong tremors, and buildings swayed following the jolt.

Taiwan’s weather agency said that the earthquake hit Taiwan’s northeastern coastal city of Yilan at 23:05 pm on Saturday (local time) and the epicentre of the quake was 32.3 kilometre east of Yilan County Hall.

The exact coordinates of the epicentre were 24.69°N, 122.08°E and the focal depth of the earthquake was 72.8 km.

The National Fire Agency said assessments were underway to determine any damage or casualties. No immediate reports of major destruction were available.

Earlier, on Wednesday, December 27, Taiwan was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1. it struck Taiwan’s southeastern coastal county of Taitung, according to the the island’s weather administration, although there were no immediate reports of damage.

There was no immediate report of damage across Taiwan, the National Fire Agency said.
