There are many actors in the industry who have had interfaith marriages, and one among them is Urmila Matondkar. The actress needs no introduction. She is known for movies like Aag, Ek Hasina Thi, Jaanam Samjha Karo, and Khoobsurat. She has always delivered power-packed performances that left audiences stunned. During her peak years, Urmila gave so many hits that she went on to become the highest-paid actress of the 90s.
Apart from her professional life, Urmila also grabbed headlines for her interfaith marriage with Mohsin Akhtar Mir in 2016. After her marriage, Urmila faced harsh trolling for marrying a Muslim man. Both she and her husband, Mohsin, were subjected to severe online harassment.
The romance between Urmila and Mohsin began at a high-profile wedding in 2014, where they were introduced during the wedding of designer Manish Malhotra’s niece.
Rumors falsely claimed that following her wedding with Mohsin Akhtar Mir, Urmila converted to Islam and changed her name to Mariyam. However, after the rumors intensified, Urmila and her husband clarified, saying, “My wife did not convert to Islam. Period,” he had said.
The harassment reached a new low when trolls hacked Urmila Matondkar’s Wikipedia page, altering her family details with fake Muslim names. In one of the interviews, Urmila slammed trolls for calling her husband a ‘terrorist.’
“My husband is not only a Muslim but a Kashmiri Muslim. We both follow our religions in an equally staunch way,” she had said.
After eight years of marriage, Urmila and Mohsin separated in 2024. They filed for divorce, though the reason for their split has not been disclosed.
