Big Stars Were First Approached for the Film

Initially, many big stars like Saif Ali Khan, Aamir Khan, and Hrithik Roshan were approached to star in this film. However, Ranbir Kapoor ultimately won the role. This film marked Karan Johar’s debut, playing the villain. He charged only 11 rupees for his role. However, Karan’s portrayal was not well-received by the public. This was considered a major reason for the film’s failure.

Director Reveals Why He Chose Ranbir Kapoor

Explaining the reason for signing Ranbir Kapoor for his magnum opus, the filmmaker told PTI, “When I wrote the film in 2006, my first choice was Saif Ali Khan. It then went to Aamir and Hrithik. The film was in discussions several times before Ranbir came on board. We even tried to make it with Ranveer Singh, but we could only raise 40 to 50 crore rupees.”

Anurag Kashyap Took Full Responsibility for the Failure

Director Anurag Kashyap took full responsibility for the film’s failure, admitting that Bombay Velvet was “one of the biggest flops of Hindi cinema.” Despite its brilliant cinematic vision, excellent music, and a glimpse of 60s Mumbai, Bombay Velvet’s story remained incomprehensible.
