'Tumse Na Ho Payega' movie review: Ishwak Singh is stuck in a mundane job in a mundane film

Cast: Ishwak Singh, Mahima Makwana, Gaurav Pandey, Gurpreet Saini, Karan Jotwani

Director: Abhishek Sinha

Language: Hindi

Always follow your dream, or create one; this could be the driving force of the new film on Disney Plus Hotstar called Tumse Na Ho Payega, directed by Abhishek Sinha and written by Dangal and Chhichhore fame Nitesh Tiwari along with Nikhil Mehrotra and Varun Agarwal. The film is about a man who’s stuck in a mundane job, this man is played by Ishwak Singh. He smiles scarcely in most of his outings, and always seems exhausted.

Not his fault. In Rocket Boys, it was about making history by crossing major and multiple hurdles so there was no time, in Adhura, it was a case of horror mixed with noir so one had to stay true to the theme and the nature of the narrative. And this time, it’s his lifeless job that has sucked all the joy out of his life. You feel pity for the actor more than the characters he essays. The title is more than just an ode to the cult of Gangs of Wasseypur, it’s about one man who went against all odds and be his own master.

Of course, it’s all there in films like 3 idiots and Tamasha. The toxic work culture that was shown most remarkably in Rocket Singh gets a humorous treatment here. Even when the boss unleashes all his venom on the employees, it’s all for smiles if not entirely for laughs. Ishwak, who plays Gaurav, now wants to do something for himself, and the friends are confused. The film doesn’t say anything that hasn’t been said before and is based on the book How I Braved Anu Aunty and Co-Founded a Million Dollar Company by Varun Agarwal.

Tiwari, who directed Dangal and Chhichhore, isn’t able to milk the emotions to full conviction this time, and neither the characters leave a lasting impression. It’s a pity because the title crackles, and so do few portions, but that’s like praising the interiors of a restaurant, the cutleries, but when the food arrives, you tell the staff exactly what the titles reads.
