Budaun Mosque Dispute: In a shocking incident, a young man was beaten up, tied to a pole, and set on fire after a dispute over a place to offer prayers inside a mosque in Budaun district of Uttar Pradesh. According to the police, the victim, 20-year-old Mehboob, received grievous burn injuries in the assault, and is being treated at a local hospital.
How the incident unfolded?
Giving details, a senior official said that on Thursday, Mehboob, a resident of Mustafabad in Budaun’s Islamnagar Nagar Panchayat, was involved in a heated argument with three men from his neighbourhood over place to offer prayers inside a local mosque in the Sahaswan Road area.
Both parties had settled the dispute on Thursday following intervention from elders. However, on Friday, the three accused confronted Mehboob on Friday morning when he came to offer Fajr (early morning) prayers at the mosque. An argument broke out, and the trio thrashed the 20-year-old, tied him to a pole, and doused with him petrol before setting him afire.
Luckily for Mehboob, the fire burned the ropes, allowing him to escape the scene, police said. The victim sustained severe burn injuries and was his family rushed him to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Rudayan, where doctors referred him to medical facility in Aligarh for advanced treatment, they said.
Why victim bought petrol before the attack?
In a statement, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Hardesh Katheria said police received information about the incident on its UP-112 emergency helpline.

Interestingly, CCTV footage from a local petrol pump showed Mehboob buying petrol shortly before the incident, raising questions about the exact details and circumstances of the alleged assault on him.
SP Katheria said a case has been registered in the matter, and “all possible angles” are being probed, adding that investigation is underway.
