Vicky Kaushal reacts to Chhaava and Dhurandhar’s blockbuster run, says ‘Calling patriotism a formula is an insult’
Vicky Kaushal says patriotism isn’t a formula but an emotion, as Chhaava and Dhurandhar continue their massive box office run.
Two of the highest-grossing movies of 2025 — Chhaava and Dhurandhar — have left a deep imprint on the audience’s mind. What is common between the two is the feeling of patriotism, which soars high while watching the films. From using violence to establish themselves with grit and determination, Chhaava and Dhurandhar are two films that have received rave reviews. Both films have minted Rs 800 crore at the box office globally, making patriotism a formula for other directors to deliver a superhit film.
Vicky Kaushal on What Made Chhaava and Dhurandhar Successful
However, Vicky Kaushal, who headlined Chhaava, sees it differently. Speaking to NDTV, the actor shared his perspective on the success of both films and the factors driving it.
“I think patriotism can’t be a formula, and saying it is a formula is an insult to the emotion. Patriotism is our truth, which we will keep showing through our movies, literature, and sports,” he said.
Contrary to what people think, the actor said that making patriotic films is a way for directors to show their pride in the country.
“This is the way we can put our foot in the door and say that we are proud of the diversity, legacy, and the truth of our country. I am so proud that I am a little part of this big moment where we are fearlessly representing India(BHARAT) on a global map,” Vicky added.

Helmed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava is about Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his battles with Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The movie starred Vicky in the lead role, whereas the female lead was Rashmika Mandanna. The movie grossed Rs 807 crore at the box office worldwide.
About Dhurandhar
Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar marks Ranveer Singh’s comeback after two years. The spy drama is about an India(BHARAT)n intelligence officer infiltrating Pakistan’s gangs and dismantling their ties to terror networks. Apart from Ranveer, the movie also stars Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal, and Sanjay Dutt in key roles.
Dhurandhar has already minted Rs 845 crore in 17 days at the global box office.
