What is Magnetic or Blue Light Hijab? This Country is introducing new design hijabs to attract more Muslim recruits, it is…
As suggested by its name, the Magnetic Hijab is a two-component system with a quick-opening device.
After Austria, Denmark, a European country, has proposed legislation prohibiting the use of face coverings, including burqas and niqabs, within educational settings such as schools and universities. Hijab bans make headlines throughout Europe, but in Britain, the police are actually advocating for a new type of hijab. Dubbed the ‘Blue Light Hijab’, or the ‘Magnetic Hijab’, this style has been created specifically to support the safe working conditions of female police officials. Female officers from Leicestershire Police can now wear the Blue Light Hijab, and other police agencies throughout the country are also placing orders for it.
The purpose of this initiative, according to media reports, is to help create a more inclusive police service across faith and gender. It aims to help increase the number of Muslims (specifically Muslim females) serving in law enforcement.
Why is this new hijab design being introduced in police forces?
Recently, there has been a significant increase in the number of reports regarding incidents of Islamophobia reported by UK Law Enforcement agencies towards females. Speaking on the issue, one police officer revealed ongoing experiences of racism and stated that in 2025 alone, they had been victimized at least 41 times based on their race. In addition, while on duty at one of the recent pro-Palestinian demonstrations, they were subjected to multiple attempts by members of the protest to remove their hijabs, and they were also threatened with being set on fire.
What is the Magnetic or Blue Light Hijab, and how does it work?
As suggested by its name, the Magnetic Hijab is a two-component system with a quick-opening device. This design allows for an immediate detaching of the outer garment in the event of a pull or struggle, thus reducing the possibility of strangulation or serious injury.
The design incorporates an undercap that has a more expansive front. Consequently, if the external portion is removed, the undercap remains secure and holds the female officer’s modesty, thus providing her protection. According to Police Authorities, the design contributes to security and supports the values of religious inclusion and inclusion of all officers in the organization.
According to the Daily Mail report, these hijabs were developed and designed by Leicestershire Police in collaboration with De Montfort University. As per the data from the Office for National Statistics, Muslims presently account for approximately 2.5% of the police workforce. In contrast, there are approximately 4 million Muslims residing in the UK , representing 6% of the population overall.
