India and South Africa have been two of the most consistent teams by a fair distance in the ongoing World Cup so far. Hosts India are the only remaining unbeaten team, having won all seven of their contests so far including a 302-run demolition of Sri Lanka on Thursday.

South Africa too have registered lop-sided victories over a majority of the top sides which includes a 190-run thrashing of New Zealand on Wednesday, and their only defeat in seven outings was a shock 38-run loss at the hands of the Netherlands in Dharamsala.

Ahead of the highly-anticipated contest, we take a look at some of their numbers in ODI cricket and in the ICC World Cup as well as statistics from past India-South Africa encounters in the format:

Head to Head:

South Africa lead India 50-37 in the 90 ODIs that they have played since the historic match at Eden Gardens in November 1991 that was the Proteas’ first international match following readmission. Three of those matches ended in a No Result.

ICC World Cup Head to Head:

South Africa also lead India 3-2 in ICC World Cup meetings since the two sides first locked horns in the 1992 World Cup. South Africa would go on to win the next two encounters as well, in 1999 and 2011. India, however, had registered dominant victories in each of their last two meetings in 2015 and 2019 respectively.

Record at Eden Gardens:

India: The Men in Blue have won 13 and lost eight matches in their 22 ODI appearances at this iconic venue. Only one match, against Sri Lanka in 2007, ended in a No Result.

South Africa: South Africa have won two and lost as many in Kolkata. Eden Gardens has a special place in South African cricket history since it was at this very venue that the Proteas ended their 20-year isolation from the sport. South Africa had lost that game, as well as their subsequent fixture at the same venue in the 1993 Hero Cup, but would go on to win their next two — hammering India by 10 wickets in 2005 and Ireland by 131 runs in the 2011 World Cup. They were supposed to play India at this venue in March 2020 but that tour got postponed due to the global outbreak of COVID-19.
