Zubeen Garg, fondly called the ‘voice of Assam,’ tragically passed away on September 19, 2025. The renowned singer died in a scuba diving accident in Singapore. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that the music legend will be cremated on September 23 with full state honours. Zubeen’s mortal remains were brought back to Assam on Sunday from Singapore.

Speaking to the media, the Assam Chief Minister said, “We have decided to cremate the legendary singer Zubeen Garg on September 23, close to Disang Resort in Sonapur. Many people are still coming to pay their homage to their beloved Zubeen Garg.”
“The Bhogeswar Baruah Stadium in Sarusajai will remain open round-the-clock, allowing thousands of fans to pay their last respects to legendary singer Zubeen Garg,” he added.
He also revealed that fans had requested Zubeen be cremated in Jorhat, as he spent his childhood there and began his musical journey in the city.
“We have discussed the matter with Garima Garg and the family members of Zubeen, and they have decided to cremate Zubeen near Guwahati,” Chief Minister Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister announced that the state government, which had earlier declared a three-day mourning period until September 22, has extended it by one more day to coincide with Zubeen Garg’s cremation.
He further stated that the Singapore government has issued the singer’s death certificate, confirming that the cause of death was drowning.
“More and more people wish to see our beloved Zubeen one last time, and we deeply understand these sentiments. Therefore, Bhogeswar Baruah Stadium will remain open throughout the night today for the public to pay their respects to Zubeen. Tomorrow as well, the mortal remains of Zubeen will be kept at Sarusajai for people to offer their homage,” he added.
