Anti-India Balen Shah declared Prime Minister candidate for Nepal Elections 2026; Forms alliance with RSP; If he becomes PM…

New Delhi: A major political upheaval has occurred in Nepalese politics. Balendra Shah (Balen Shah), the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, has been formally declared the Prime Minister candidate. This announcement came after Balen Shah officially announced an alliance with the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in Nepal on March 5, 2026, and various political equations are being formed. Balen Shah has signed an agreement for a pre-election alliance. Under this seven-point agreement, 35-year-old Balen Shah has been made the parliamentary party leader and the face of the alliance for the Prime Minister’s post. Meanwhile, RSP chief Ravi Lamichhane will remain the party president.

Alliance Was Announced On Sunday, 28 December

A meeting to finalize this alliance continued late into the night on Saturday, December 27, and the alliance was announced on Sunday, 28 December 2025, morning. According to the agreement between the two parties, Balen and his supporters will contest the elections under the RSP’s election symbol, the ‘bell’. Balen has agreed to merge his political team with the RSP, although the party’s name, flag, and election symbol will remain the same. Both sides said that they have “taken responsibility for the movement led by the younger generation against corruption and misgovernance and are committed to fulfilling the demands raised during the protests, including providing support to those injured in clashes with security forces.”

This agreement is being described as a political extension of the Gen Z movement that took place in September 2025. Both sides announced that they would carry forward the movement started by the youth against corruption, poor governance, and unemployment. The September violence resulted in the death of at least 70 people.

Balen Shah’s Stance On India(BHARAT)

Balen Shah has criticized India(BHARAT) several times and his statements have often given the impression that he supports reducing Nepal’s dependence on India(BHARAT). He has repeatedly made strong statements regarding border disputes with India(BHARAT), such as the Kalapani-Lipulekh issue. He has also accused India(BHARAT) of interfering in Nepalese politics. However, he has not yet made any statements in support of China, and there are no indications that he is pro-China.
