Asim Munir’s NEW POWERS: Amid the deteriorating economy, increasing debt and rising inflation, cash-strapped Pakistan is witnessing one of the military’s most powerful eras. No, the army is not directly seizing power but its chief Asim Munir is going to take charge as the country’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). The post has been created specially for Munir through the 27th Amendment to the Pakistani Constitution. This amendment puts Asim Munir at the helm of the Pakistan Armed Forces – the army, air force and navy. Munir will rule all the three forces for the next five years. Let’s know about his new powers.

What Is 27th Amendment?

On November 1, the Senate passed a series of amendments which abolished the position of Chairman – senior-most tri-services role – of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC). The position of CJCSC was created back in 1976 by the then Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto after Islamabad lost the 1971 war with India(BHARAT).

Notably, today is the last day of General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the incumbent CJCSC. With this, the decade long position of CJCSC has ended.

The Historic Rise Of Asim Munir

Year 2022 marked a historic turn in Pakistan’s history when Asim Munir took charge as the army chief after serving in various senior positions. He served as Quartermaster General and Corps Commander Gujranwala, of the Military Intelligence and head of Inter-Services Intelligence. In 2019, Munir was removed from the position of ISI chief in just 8 months, it happened when Imran Khan was the prime minister of Pakistan. However, the reason for his removal is still unknown.

Munir’s was facing a very bad time but his fate changed when lawmakers ousted Khan. Then Shehbaz Sharif took oath as the new PM and gave him charge of the military.

In May, Munir was promoted to field marshal after a four-day clash with India(BHARAT).

Is Asim Munir The Most Powerful Man In Pakistan?

As per retired Lieutenant General Naeem Khalid Lodhi, Munir, after taking the new charge, will become the most powerful man in the country.

“Field Marshal Asim Munir has become the most powerful man in Pakistan,” Lodhi said.

Naeem Khalid Lodhi further said that the politicians of the country are responsible for increasing his power.  “The politicians are responsible for making him even more powerful. For their short-term interests, they have put Pakistan’s long-term interests at stake,” he told AFP.
