What happened with Imran Khan inside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail? Authorities say his health is…

A day after viral social media reports claimed that Imran Khan had been murdered inside the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, the prison authorities refuted the rumors as “baseless”, and stated that former Pakistan Prime Minister is in good health inside the high-security jail.

What did Adiala Jail authorities say?

In a statement, the Adiala Jail authorities also junked claims about Imran Khan’s health, asserting that the 73-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician is “fully healthy and receiving complete medical attention”. “There is no truth to reports about his transfer from Adiala Jail,” they added.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also responded to the claims about Imran Khan’s condition at the Adiala Jail, claiming that the jailed ex-premier is living a “comfortable” life behind the bars. “Check the menu of the food that comes for him — it is not available even in a five-star hotel. He has a TV in his jail cell … and his food comes from outside. There are exercise machines available for him as well,” Asif said, according to Geo TV.

Recalling his own incarceration, Asif said, “We used to sleep on the cold floor and eat the food [prepared] at the jail,” describing conditions with limited blankets and no hot water. By contrast, he alleged that Imran Khan had “a double bed and velvet bedding”, and said the jail superintendent personally attended to him.

Asif remarked that Imran should “listen to his own speech on the jail’s loudspeaker,” adding that “he (Imran) should fear God.”

How claims about Imran Khan’s originated?

The clarification from Pakistani authorities comes a day after rumors, citing unverified reports, went viral on social media platforms, claiming that Imran Khan had been “assassinated” inside the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where he has been incarcerated since August 2023.

The rumors stemmed from reports, that cited “sources” to claim that the former Pakistani premier has been killed. Several posts, including one from an X handle claiming to represent the “Ministry of Foreign Affairs Baluchistan”, carried a purported image showing Khan lying motionless on a stretcher.

However, independent fact-checkers noted that the image of Imran Khan being circulated on social media handles is from November 2022, when the jailed ex-PM had indeed survived an assassination attempt.
