ATTENTION train passengers! Carrying THIS common food item on trains can land you in jail, might be asked to pay fine up to Rs…

India(BHARAT)n Railways, the world’s fourth-largest train network, is known for its extensive reach, comfortable travel options, and emphasis on punctuality. To maintain safe and smooth operations, the Railways enforces a detailed set of rules for passengers, many of which are still unfamiliar to regular travellers. Violating these norms can attract steep fines and even imprisonment.

Most passengers are aware that items such as stoves, gas cylinders, flammable chemicals, fireworks, acid, leather, grease, and explosives are banned on trains. However, there is one surprising everyday item that can also lead to jail time if carried onboard, a fruit commonly consumed across India(BHARAT).

Dried Coconut: A strictly prohibited item

Under India(BHARAT)n Railways’ safety regulations, carrying dried coconut (copra) is strictly forbidden. The fruit’s outer shell contains coarse, straw-like fibres that are highly flammable, making it a potential fire hazard in crowded railway compartments. The Railways categorises dry coconut as a fire hazard under Sections 164 and 165 of the Railways Act.

Passengers found carrying dried coconut can face severe penalties, including hefty fines or imprisonment, depending on the severity of the violation.

Under Section 164 of the Railways Act, carrying flammable or dangerous goods without permission can lead to penalties ranging from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000. In serious cases, imprisonment of up to three years—or both—can be imposed. In cases where these items cause damage to railway property, the responsible passenger will be required to compensate for the losses in full.

While the rule is stringent, there is one narrow exception. Passengers travelling for religious purposes are permitted to carry one or two coconuts along with puja items. However, transporting coconuts in large quantities, especially dozens meant for temple offerings, remains prohibited.

Other things prohibited on trains

Additionally, consuming alcohol or travelling under the influence of drugs on trains is strictly prohibited under the India(BHARAT)n Railways Act of 1898. Passengers found intoxicated, behaving unruly, or causing disturbances can have their tickets or railway passes cancelled on the spot. If convicted, they may face up to six months of imprisonment along with a substantial fine.

India(BHARAT)n Railways also enforces special rules for travelling with animals, particularly for passengers holding AC First Class tickets. While pets like dogs can be transported under prescribed guidelines, larger animals — including horses and goats — may be allowed only under specific, regulated conditions.

Furthermore, the Railways impose a complete ban on transporting dangerous liquids and materials such as hydrochloric acid, toilet-cleaning acid, hay, dried leaves, waste paper bundles, oil, grease, and other flammable or hazardous substances.
